We all have a pretty good idea of what a good bass player is, (I hope) but what qualifies one as a good guitarist?

Cool

I know it when I hear it. My guitar instructor plays ,reads all styles and is a monster in the studio. Most guitar players can only play one or two styles. For me a good guitar player is one that gets it right in 2 or 3 takes on the spot.

The same qualities that make any good musician...a good musician - regardless of instrument: a great ear; an innate sense of good time; sensitivity to other musicians; a broad appreciation for music of many genres; a strong instinct for the right kind of part to play, in the right place, at the right time; good taste, the ability to innovate as well as improvise; creativity; passion...and preferably the ability to read, compose and arrange...
