Here is a youtube "Bass Business Card".

Michael Bernstein-Bass Business Card - YouTube

How many of you have made a similar video? What would you do differently than this guy?

Me? I'd set up the video in a more clinical or studio style setting, I'd be sure to look/dress like I'd be expected to look/dress on-stage for the gig I was pursuing and I would pick more recognizable samples.

Dress better and play better and record better. Less noodling, more thought (and practice) into what exactly was going to be played.

But I'm not going to knock the guy. He's got courage to do something I probably wouldn't do.

yes and yes ...

I put a bunch of poorly recorded laptop videos on youtube ... if someone ask for a recording i send them a link to my channel. I also state that they are poor excuses for a video but it's all im capable of producing on my own.

I don't think it has to be a professionally done video, it doesn't take hifi audio or artistic videography to establish that you can indeed play. However, things that are in your control should be up to snuff.

To me, kickin' back on the couch in a very unnatural playing position was a very bad choice for this.

To put this in context a bit, I found this link in a Craigslist ad posted by a local player looking for work. If your using something like this "out front" it should be the best you can make it. If it's just for backup, to send to someone you've already connected with just to establish some of your skills, maybe it's alright.

Things I like about his vid...

Simple titles, get's the info out that is needed to make contact.

Narrative was short and sweet, he didn't blather on about how great he is or all of his accomplishments. He let his playing speak for itself.

It was kinda cool, but he's a douchebag. It's obvious from the clip on headstock tuner...

I wouldn't play so sloppily for one.

Better sound

Less Douchbagery and not sitting with my junk in your faces

Wash my hair first

Better lighting

Better apparel

Not end with walkie-talkie lingo "over and out"

...and certainly wouldn't stare at the neck so much.

What the hell is the strap for when you're seated?

Hey, I found a link to this thread on my youtube page. Gave me an excuse to finally join. About the video...I'm not a pro looking for session work...the "card", I thought, might give potential bands an idea of what I could (or couldn't) do, and could save me a little time and gas money just in case they heard me play and it was an immediate no-go. Hence, the quality doesn't have to be super, as long as it gets the job done. As for my hair and clothes, I'm sending this thing to rock musicians, not GQ. The playing is not my cleanest..but I was (strangely enough) a little nervous while recording it, and I think it still gets the idea across. I might be more of a dork than a douchebag (I save that term for the guys you see with fake tans and 250 dollar jeans on at dance clubs), and the pro that got me into the Snark tuners is one of the smoothest dudes I know (and a killer player).
