Good Jazz History?

So, I've been starting to listen to jazz lately. I'm at the point where I have a few favorites, but still haven't scratched the surface. I'm hoping to get a few suggestions for a good book. Looking for an interesting read that still goes through the timeline of the genre and some good stories from the jazz greats. I guess I'd be open to a dvd or two also if you know of any good documentaries.

i read jazz 101, a complete guide to loving and learning jazz. a bit dry, but very informational, and it held my interest, albeit with a slightly weak grip.

Any books by Jerry Coker would be a good read.
