Good musical town to move to?

Sign in to disble this ad
Well if you read all this thanks. I am 19 and have 4 terms of college odne i will have my criminal justice degree in 1-2 years from now. I am looking to than move after that to a musical town to try and push my musical talents in a band. Yes i am looking for big time success and i know how impossible it is , but you live once and if i do not try i will always wonder what could have been my whole life.

My style of music i would probably be going at is more pop punk style. I am not into heavy metal , goth , blues reggae etc . the hardest stuff i like is guns n roses. The towns i had in mind are

L.A-obvious choice but its so big
san fransisco-my friend wants to move tehre i dont
Chicago- i heard the punks scene is good there

seattle- well its seattle
las vegas- i heard some indie emo bands coming out of there

Basically any ideas are cool i have over 1 year to think of this. Anything is better than oregon , even portland oregon is kinda to dead to make music out of and a little small.

thanks guys

San Diego. It's like LA ... wait. Not it's not. It's better. If they would move San Diego OUT of California, I'd move back in a second.

Pretty lively music scene. Diverse, also.

For a small town, Gainesville, Florida can't be touched. Lots and lots of bands and cool places to play.

+1 to Gainesville. I almost moved there with my girlfriend a few years ago... we couldn't deal with Florida climate though.

I will say that here in Baltimore the pop-punk is well and alive!

I play in more of a power-pop band, and the scene here is huge. It's due in part to Insubordination Records being based here (our drummer is one of the owners and is also the vocalist/guitarist for The Beatnick Termites). We just played the 3 day Insubordination Fest two weeks ago and TONS of people came out.

So yeah... Baltimore definatly has the pop-punk love. But it's also a great scene in general, from Doom metal, to thrash, to crust to... whatever the hell you'd call all the Wham City stuff..

IIRC Rolling Stone recently said that we have the best music scene (or one of the best) in the country...

Nashville, Austin, or Chicago always seemed like good options. I have freinds that have lived in all three and they loved them, very diverse music scene too.

Minneapolis has a great scene. I think St. Paul is a little bit more cool, myself, but they are both awesome towns if you can stand the frigid temperatures (I couldn't).

If you're into death metal, I'd say south/central FL. Tampa, to be exact.

Austin is a fantastic place for playing music. For making money at playing music, though, not so much. Terrible, in fact.

Minneapolis is awesome all around (like the other guy said, if you can stand the winters), with a great music scene and some good venues.

San Francisco is my hometown, and let me tell you it sucks to be a musician there. You could not pay me to move back there for the music scene. Ever since the dotcom boom and bust, venues just want to hire DJ's. Bands are forgotten.

Portland is OK for bands, but the job market is the pits.

Asheville NC is a great place to be a musician, but it is a small town so it won't suit somebody who wants to be in the hustle bustle of a bigger city.

LaLa land is always good, and yes it is big, but you can always live in the out lying areas and still be practicaly anywhere in an hour.

Seatle I understand is still poppin

Portland seems to be dead or dying, I'm not sure which. Good thing I'm not looking to gig alot.

SF, I don't know much about.

KC is always good, but I don't know about the Pop-Punk scene. Rock and Blues will never die there.

I'm considering a move to either Texas, probably Austin, or Tenn. Probably Memphis. And am trying to find out what I can about those places besides the obvious.

For my old band, Detroit was our second home. Played some RAD shows there with Circle Takes the Square and Suicide Note.

Heavy music of all varieties is pretty well represented there and it's a pretty good scene all together.

I've considered moving there a few times myself. But honestly, Baltimore really is rad.

This is just my opinion, but I would stay out of cali right now. Cost of living is up and jobs are down, and if you can't get gigs you need a plan B.

LA sucks.

Not sure why you don't want to move to San Francisco, but that's okay. This is a metal town. We don't want you here. I might just be discouraging you so that housing prices don't start going up again with more people moving here, and I don't want more people competing with me for jobs. Stay out.

Gainesville? really? wow , I always thought the song "Gainesville rock city" was a joke LOL. I guess with the huge college crowd there the clubs stay busy 7 nights a week.
for as big as it is, jax pretty much sucks as far as the music scene, there arent that many clubs that have live music and the list gets smaller everyday. Lots of bands come from Jacksonville, not many stay here though.

What are some good venues in gainesville? it's not too far from us.
