Good non-pedal tuner for 5-string?

Sign in to disble this ad
My tuner died on me, and never tracked well on the B string anyway. I don't really need a pedal-form tuner, just something cheap that actually works well. I've tried cheap guitar/bass tuners from the guitar-playing friends I jam with, and they all tend to be very unresponsive or inconsistent on the B string. Any recommendations for tuners that work well with 5 string basses? I did a search, but it seems like everything that comes up is pitchblack/tu-2/strobe tuner threads.

I haven't used one personally, but I"d say that the Peterson stroboFLIP might be right up your alley

I don't know if its still being made, but I've used the Seiko ST737 for probably 8 or 9 years as my main tuner. I think it was like $30.

Try tuning your B string using the harmonic at the 12th or 5th fret - you'll find pretty much any tuner will track just fine.

I used a little Korg CA-30 for years, worked great.

The black korg tuner has worked great for me. I would always double check it because it tracks the E string really well, then you just do 5th fret harmonic on the B, and 7th fret harmonic on E (which is tuned correctly), and see if they sound the same. If they don't, tune until they are.

P.S. I'm assuming you know how to tune by ear.

That would work fine, sure (listening for the beats ). But the tuner will track fine on the 5th fret B string harmonic anyway, so you could still tune competely muted if you need to.
