I listen to it. I liken the genre (Death Metal) to watching a slasher film. Steven King once said soething along the lines that people like to be scared and talk about evil in a fantasy since because it takes our mind off of real stressers in life. I think it works the same way with extreme metal. Plus coming from an artisits point of view its fun to get on a mic and growl f'ed up stuff. Its not for everyone.

Again try thinking of it as the musical equivelant to a Jason movie. Does that make since?

Also many death metal bands have extremely technical players. Like Alex Webster:

(Alex is on the blue Bass, and dont worry this is a non vocal version so you can just hear the band play.)

Most of the bands that have gory lyrics don't take them seriously at all. Neither should you. If you like the music who cares what the guy growling is talking about? Most people can't make out what most death metal vocalists are saying anyway.

I saw a YouTube video where Alex Webster was talking about working in the studio, and he specifically pointed to a thesaurus and a rhyming dictionary. Sounds like he takes Cannibal Corpse's blood-curdling lyrics pretty seriously. But I'll agree with Yngwie above, it's mostly just an outlet for expressing fantasies. As weird as their fantasies are, it's healthier to sing/write about them than pretend you don't have those thoughts every once in awhile.

Yeah, some people have a fascination with the occult/death/gore, and some are also avid music fans and musicians. It's great that they have an outlet for their creativity, the way other artists talk about emotions or tell stories with their music. Like anything it can be exaggerated (some feel the need to be as excessive as possible) but I don't think it's a bad thing. Either way, a very VERY small minority of those lyricists actually practice what they preach.

As for the music, of course, it's a matter of personal tastes. To each his own. I enjoy the heaviness and even the lyrics, though I'm not a big listener.

I listen to a little bit of it. I think of all the metal I listen to only Cannibal Corpse and Pungent Stench would fit into the "gore genre" though. I don't think your Slipknots or Mudvaynes or Slayers or Dream Theatres fall into that category do they?

I listen to it for the extreme speed and heaviness of the music, the "out there" factor behind the genre and because it's a bit of a laugh when you boil it down to words really

Slayer might fit Death Metal. I call them thrash, but there are definitley some death style songs like Necrophobic for example.
