Got my drum machine...stoked..and wonder why I took so long!

My jam group (band?) lack a drummer and until we find one that can host three guys and gear, I figured why not be the whole rythym section.

So I got an SR-18, and in 30 minutes I was jamming along with all the presets, very stoked.

Then it hit while just playing all the standard blues appregios.....this is alot more fun than doing it without drums......or with a metronome for that matter. My whole groove felt better, and I knew for a fact when I was off or sloppy.

I should have got one of these machines when I started playing......big smile factor but also, I think it is like a metronome and critical to developing timing because you got something to play against.....albeit, it is always in time as opposed to my jammates LOL.

Besides it seems all bassists end up owning a drum set or writing drum parts also, and vice versa, some sort of multiple personality thing I guess.

I was torn between getting the Alesis SR-18 or it's sibling, the Akai XR20. My first drum machine ever was the SR-16. Definitely some great preset drum patterns in the Alesis line of drum machines to shed with. Both the Alesis and Akai line are laid out the same function and programming wise, so I ended up chosing the XR20 for it's modern sound bank. Love that SR-18 though for all of it's preset drum patterns in virtually any genre you could imagine. The XR20 preset drum patterns are focused more towards dance music and rap, but there are some neo-soul patterns on there too. Some of those patterns on the SR-18, particularly the latin music patterns, would be a challenge for me to program. More than likely I will eventually just buy an SR-18 and add it to the collection.

You're motivating me to set up my Boss DR-880 again. Everything you say is very true.

Me too. I need to blow the dust off of my Zoom. Not the greatest presets, but it most certainly is fun... and that's the main reason that I play.
