Got a Stingray? Got a P-bass? I need your help. :)

Sign in to disble this ad

I'm putting together a Frankenstein bass, And I could use the help of anyone who's got a tape measure and one of the following:

Fender Precision Bass

Musicman Stingray

Basically, I have a custom bass body that I want to load up with a precision and a Musicman pup...

Now, I wanted these to be placed as close to the original position on each of these basses as possible...

so, starting from the neck pocket, could you please measure between the spots marked by the red line on each bass on the following pic?

Thanks a lot guys.

I DO have a Pbass that I COULD measure, but I think that if I give you the standard measurements, it might be of more help to you.

Pbass
from the nut side of the 12th fret to the E/A pole-piece centers is 11.000 inches

MM
from the nut side of the 12th fret to the centers of the neck side magnets is 13.125 inches
from the nut side of the 12th fret to the centers of the bridge side magnets is 14.0625 inches
from the nut side of the 12th fret to the neck side edge of the pup is 12.5625 inches

note: the bridge measurements you ask for really are specific for the particular model of bridge the you are going to use . . . on a 34 inch scale bass (as are both of these basses) the G-string bridge saddle should be at 17 inches from the center if the 12th fret, and the other bridge saddles progressively further away depending on the thicknesses of the strings

It sounds like the p'ups are going to end up in the same(oddly shaped) hole.

Yeah...

The idea was to try to retain the pup position so I could get as close as possible to the sound of each individual bass... but I dont know If this is going to work out being that they are so close...

can anyone shed some light on the implications of having one pup right next to the other?

I've searched for builders that have that kind of config, and came up with Sandberg basses... but they seem to move the P Pup up a bit to leave some room between them.

IIRC the Warwick $$ has the pups really close together . . .
also, some of my basses (the ones with 2 pups) have a Basslines SMB-5A in the Pbass position (with the neck side polepieces where the Pbass E/A polepieces are and the bridge side polepieces more or less where the Pbass D/G polepieces are; wired series, internally) and another SMB-5A in the traditional MM pup location (wired parallel, internally) with the 2 pups wired parallel with each other and going to a 500Kohm volume pot (only).

I guess I need to borrow a digital camera or a cellphone with a camera (mine is an old-fashioned on - not even GSM!!) to take some photos . . .

EDIT: I notice that the Pbass pup in your picture is backwards, but it does appear to be in the right place. The measurement of 11.000 inches is from the nut side of the 12th fret to the pole-piece centers closest to the NUT! In your photo that would be the D/G part of the pup.

EDIT 2: I find that there IS interaction between the 2 pups of my basses when both pups are on, but I LIKE how it sounds. Either pup sounding alone, by itself, DOES retain the "signature" sound of the particular pup. As always YMMV.

Hey bud... where'd you get those standard measurements? I've tried googling that and nothing interesting turned up...

I wonder if you could get another measurement for me, (or tell me where to find it...teach a man to fish and all that )

I need to know the measurement from the nut side of the 12th fret on a P-Bass to the end of the body. (doesnt have to be exact, but as close to it as possible please)

Cheers.
