Tried a
Tusq A3 (.88mm) pick last night and was really impressed. I've generally preferred something heavier but despite its thinness the Tusq is easily as stiff as most 1.5mm picks. The combination of being extremely thin and stiff gives it an interesting very pointed attack without being at all clicky. The Tusq material has a certain almost resonant feel and doesn't seem harsh sounding either which I'm sure adds to the overall effect of pleasant clarity. Clear tonal variations can be had by using different parts of the pick. Because it's so thin I found it quite comfortable using the wide edge ala Bobby Vega. Playing with the point is very precise and fast. That almost magic combination of stiffness and thinness is very unique and there really wasn't any place, point, shoulder or back that wasn't comfortable and good sounding.
I'm not sure at this point if I'll completely give up Blue Chips for the Tusq but I'm going to give them a serious try over the next little while. It wouldn't surprise me if they did become what I reach for first. It has its own very definite character that won't be for everyone but at $5 for a 6-pack it's not like the things are a huge roll of the dice to try.
