Grunge Covers

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB,

so my friends and I are in a "grunge band", and we have an upcoming gig. The gig is a party for a friend (we are in highschool) and we need around an hour and a half of solid material. We are a relatively new band, currently with around 30-35 mins of material.

Now since its a party, we want to do covers. we currently have 2: December by collective soul and Creep by Radiohead.

Im looking for songs most people would know and are simple to play (we have a month or so before the gig), so I hope you guys can help me out.

thx

Alice in Chains:
Them Bones
We Die Young
Man in the Box
Would
No Excuses
Nutshell

Soundgarden:
Loud Love
Outshined
Kickstand
Black Hole Sun
Jesus Christ Pose
Spoonman
The Day I Tried to Live
Pretty Noose

Stone Temple Pilots:
Creep
Interstate Love Song
Plush
Wicked Garden
Vasoline
Crackerman
Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart
Down
Sex Type Thing

Bush:
Glycerine

Temple of the Dog:
Hunger Strike
Say Hello to Heaven

Pearl Jam:
Alive
Even Flow

Nirvana:
Come as you are
Spells Like Teen Spirit
Heart Shaped Box

Then you can go into bands like Green River, Mudhoney, and Mad Season, although those bands typically aren`t well known by the general public.

do not play smells like teen spirit, nobody really wants to hear it.

play "Crazy bitch" by buck cherry, "are you gonna be my girl" by jet, a killers song (i suggest all these things that I have done), probably sex is on fire by Kings of Leon, and then maybe a Nirvana cover that ISN'T SLTS. (Maybe Andrew W.K.'s "Party Hard)

you may think those songs are "mainstream and corperate" but party guests WILL enjoy listening to them and people will be more inclined to listen. If you're at a party, why would you want to depress people with Creep? It's a fantastic song, but not a party song.

My point is, if you're going to play covers at a party, play high energy catchy songs that people know and can move to!

A few suggestions that'll fit both bills - Not exactly grunge, kinda' poppy, but not so much that you feel like a 'tard, and not too hard to learn before the gig:

White Stripes: Icky Thump and Seven Nation Army
Girlschool: Emergency
Motorhead: Ace of Spades (of course)
Mother Love Bone: Bone China
Quicksand: Thorn In My Side
Smashing Pumpkins: Cherub Rock
Fugazi: Waiting Room

Then sprinkle in your fair share of party bands like The Ramones and Green Day, and if you really want to have fun, play "Cum on Feel the Noise" by Quiet Riot.
