Guide for the "GAS afflicted" & "used gear hound".....

Around here I read a lot of threads about Buying, selling, and trading gear. Some threads are from Guys who are totally stoked about the recent awesome find. While other threads are about deals gone wrong, getting the shaft on trading up with a music store, buying something on the net that turns out to be junk, or just out right paying more for something than it is worth.
With this in mind I wanted to start a thread to help steer Folks who aren't in the know, in the right direction as far as buying and selling gear.
I will start by listing some things I have learned Myself, getting burned and whatnot. I am by no means the gear buying expert, so chime in whenever to add something or correct Me if I am wrong.
Here goes it:

1) Never swap any gear/equipment with a music store expecting to get what You could sell it for on Your own. These Guys are businesses, and open the doors every morning to make money.

2) Buying anything sight unseen is a gamble. A number of things can happen. You'll Love it, hate it, it could be a broken pile of junk, or the seller could be a scam artist. Buying from online retailers is somewhat safe, as You have a store front to deal with if the wires get crossed.

3) Never pay more than something is worth. As good as the deal may seem, do Your homework. Ask around here, or check ebay for completed listings as to what it sold for recently. GAS will sometimes steer You into bad gear decisions.

4) Dont ever refrain from returning something to the store where You bought it. If it sucks and You hate it, has issues, or You weren't happy with the deal. By all means, take it back to where You bought it. Don't feel bad because You made a bad move buying something, that is what return policies and warranties are for.

I am sure I have missed a whole lot of something so You guys add on.....

New or used, if I can't hold it in my hands, I will refrain from buying it. Though I generally prefer new gear. Most makers are putting out very nice stuff these days.
