Which Guitar amp

Sign in to disble this ad
All right guys don't castagate me for this, but I bought a Strat just to fool around with. I never have played guitar before so I was wondering what a decent amp would be for the house.
Thanks

I really like the Vox combo amps. Nice quality, fairly loud (loud enough for home and jams, maybe small gigs) and you get some effects to mess with.

Fender Blues Junior. A small, relatively inexpensive, tube amp.

I agree with gckat and will take that a step further. There are a ton of recent small tube combos that are perfect. The fender pro and blues junior, the fender champ, the orange tiny terror, the epiphone valve junior. There are a few more out there. All will give you at least 1 really good tone.

For about $200 you can get a Gretsch Electromatic G5222 combo, it's a 5-watt tube combo, it looks great, and supposedly sounds great.

Or for about the same price you can get a Vox Valvetronix AD15VT 15-watt hybrid modeling amp (or for about $50 more you can get the AD30VT 30-watt amp). I have the 50-watt version, and in manual mode I can get lots of very nice tones from it.

Thanks for the input guys. There's a Fender hot rod delux on Ebay for $248 shipped if no one bids. What do you all think?

OK, I checked out the Vox Valvetronix ones online. They are the VT and XL models. What are the differences? I would probable bend more towards playing Hard Rock and Blues with an occasional heavy metal tune..

I have a Epiphone VJ head that I run into my bass cab. Great tone for the price especially if you like blues/rock sound. I've been planning to pick up a Behringer Metal Zone copy to play metal when I need it.

You NEED at least 50w and a 4x12 cab. For your bedroom. If it's your basement, it should be probably 100w and 2 4x12s.

This is just my bedroom rig.

I'm entirely kidding.

Look for a cool little combo that you like the features of. I'm not nutty on modeling amps, but there's a lot to choose from, and it's not all expensive stuff.

The XL is more for metal whereas the VT has a more classic vibe. I used to own a VT, not bad at all, but I'd recommend a Tech21 Trademark60 if you can get one, compact, light and with great tones.

What do you think about just buying a tube head and running it into my NV610? I wonder how it would sound running in my SVTII? The Strats on layaway so I can't try it yet.

If you're not concerned with getting a traditional "good" sound- running through a modern bass cab is fine. It'll work- but so much of "good" guitar tone is about the cab and speakers. That's why people fork out the big bank for old 20-25w speakers- they break up and distort. Most modern bass speakers are pretty well designed to limit distortion. Most modern bass cabs are voiced with bass frequencies in mind.

100w is overkill for playing at home. Heck, my 50w are too loud for most anywhere, except if you're outdoors, not playing through the PA.

I don't think it would sound as nice. The speakers in guitar amps are much more efficient, and are designed to break up when pushed. The speakers in the NV610, and the cabinet itself are designed quite differently.

You can give it a try, but I don't think it will sound like a Marshall. But who knows?

I'll second the Tech21 Trademark 60. It's a very versatile amp that's lightweight. The Trademark 10 and 30 are very nice as well. They are solid state, but it's hard to tell.

For tube tones for blues and rock, the Fender Hot Rods and Blues Deville are nice. But, the great value that's out there is the Peavey Classic. I own a Classic 30, and it's all tube and the sound is there. Great versatility, and lovely tube goodness.
