Has anyone heard whether GC will be doing their 20% off one item again this year on the day after Thanksgiving?

The economy stinks; it blew my credit; I had to foreclose on my formerly-affordable suddenly-overpriced house . So let's take advantage of the upside of this: It's a buyer's market ! If you're not offered the discount you want, just walk away. You'll find it elsewhere. They've gotta move their gear and, wow, is it fixin' to be a disastrous holiday shopping season for them, the worst in decades. It's time we gave the well-monied mega-chains etc. a conditional economic incentive. Naturally, this applies to the purchase of less interesting things, like large appliances .

If you have the GC card, they're already offering no payments/no interest for a year on pretty much everything in the store. Coupons, gift cards for good customers, etc are all marketing techniques to get people in the store and move product. GC is hurting big time. If you don't believe me, do some research. Why do you suppose Best Buy made the move they did with their music department if they didn't sense weakness with GC?

As the holidays get closer, you're going to see an abandonment of the DM policy in the hope of salvaging something out of the shopping season. Even with that, a lot of people simply don't have the money or credit to buy any kind of big ticket items. I think interesting things will start happening with GC after the first of the year.

With best buy in the music market you get bad customer service for the same price, now if you know someone who works at GC you can usually get decent prices. And people are a lot more comfortable going into to best buy, and GC an can kind of intimidating to some people.

Eh, just find cheaper gear alternatives. Use money on car payments and food and stuff.

I was thinking the same thing.

What kind of holiday deals can we expect online and from "brick and mortar" stores?

Horrible sale. They really didn't have crap on sale other than 15 percent off coupon, which I can get without the damn coupon anyway. I've never paid full price at GC.

However, they had a used Classic tube 300w AMpeg head and they wanted 1099. I offered 800 and they denied it and said I had to come up with at least 925 plus tax. I walked out. I really wanted it. I offered half the dang list. They probably paid the guy $500 for it used. It was in good condition. Never played out of one before. Picked the crappiest bass and it made it sound like butter. Loved the amp. Wanted it. Just don't want to spend 1000 for it.

Should I have?

The sales I've seen so far just won't cut it in this economy.

I agree. 15 percent off is what any smart buyer in that store gets on any given Friday. They are nuts.

I got my Warwick Corvette Std passive Fiver @ GC earlier this year. They wanted 25% more than they got from me, and this was after they'd already "given me" that dime-a-dozen 10% "discount." I told 'em the truth: The sales folk @ x, y, z online music-mega-stores had all offered me the dubious 10% off, so clearly this is a standard gimmick & it won't fly by me. I wasn't going to pay an inflated price 'cause I didn't have to.

The store was refreshingly devoid of the usual crowd, so we hung out, chatting about the economy. I empathised, saying it must be rough for them these days. These guys in sales wanted their commissions, reasonably enough (they're not the fat cats) & stuff isn't selling. So I got the bass I wanted @ a fraction of the online prices. They've all gotta move the merch. Show no mercy (thanx, Slayer): GC ain't no mom n' pop operation. Neither are MF, 123 et al. BUT YOU ARE! Respect, Hill
