Guitar equivalent to TB

Sign in to disble this ad
Anybody have any suggestions for, as the title says, a geetar equivalent to Talkbass? Mainly because there's some axes I need to get for my studio and I'd love to pick some brains and peruse the classifieds of peeps who know what's what. I know enough about guitars to not make totally regrettable buying decisions but still, could use some more insight . . .

I think TB exists because bassists in general tend to hang with other bassists, and are friendlier. I have never seen the "fellowship" in the guitarist world that I do amongst bassists. Maybe it's as simple as an extrapolation of the role of the bassist to tie everything together as a personality trait---- where guitarists fly their own direction or are often ego-driven. Generalizing of course.

sorry, absolutely no help to the OP, just an observation

there really isn't that i know. with bassists, and with drummers, you have dumb ones, but a lot of bright ones as well, who are really passionate. with guitar, for every 1 person you can actually listen to, there are 15 more who are complete blathering idiots. with bass and drums, it's closer to (but isn't really) a 1 to 1 ratio.

Seriously guys, The Gear Page. 90% of the things I've learned about gear came from that forum. It was a great place before Harmony Central crashed, then all the immature ones came flooding to TGP. It's still great, but not as great as it once was. Check it out.

I do think this is true to a degree--there is a fellowship of the low end so to speak. Was thinking there might be a similar stomping ground for guitar out there where I could poke around, in particular in the classifieds. Otherwise it's back to Ebay, and the usual suspects!
The Gear Page looks like it might be worth exploring a bit.

A few different things---mainly cheapos that have a cool retro vibe but are actually somewhat "setup-able"--solid or hollowbody, also an affordable but decent lap steel. I love old Silvertones, Teiscos, etc. I currently have a Strat, Tele, and a Les Paul in here and need a few more options. Acoustics are covered.

^I think there is a great deal of true to this post.^

I've been (or still am, I guess) a member of 3 different guitar forums. With the exception of the Christian Guitar Forum, I have found all the others that I've visited to be the way, onion describes. Even the Christian Guitar Forum isn't quite the same as TB. I find TB to be funner and even friendlier.

I'm sure there are places that you can get some questions answered and some information about guitars; however, I haven't found any guitar sites that could be considered the equivalent of what TB is to bass.

I'm having trouble imagining what type of sound you're going for that you can't get with these 3 guitars.

Jazz? Get a good Gibson or Epiphone hollow body with humbuckers and you've got that covered too.

What am I missing?

What about a couple of Rickenbacker electrics, a six and a twelve? For that Byrds, Tom Petty, early Beatles (et al) vibe.

Try the Fender Discussion Page, AKA the FDP. It's a great guitar forum that's a lot like TB. They're very welcoming of newbies. It's also well-moderated, and the posting rules are the same as here on TB.

I've been looking for a guitar forum as well, and I must say none of them impressed me. It makes you realize how well structured / inhabited TB is. I am glad to support it.

It's true I have the 3 mainstays, but there's something about weird old pawn-shop type geetars that I love for certain things--like the Teiscos and Silvertones. You can kind of get the vibe using one of the other three I have but they often sound too good! Not clanky and quirky enough. Thing is, I pop into pawn shops these days and you don't see those--you see horrible purple hair metal cheapos, like bad copies of Jacksons!
Would love a Ric, but too expensive. I can just pick up a new Dano and it will certainly be handy of course. Looked at a Bari, but my Jerry Jones 'horn bass on the back pickup pretty well gets that sound for me.
And an Epi hollowbody/archtop type of axe with buckers could be great--I could get a lot of use out of that.
And definitely a lap steel---I fake it now with my 'Paul on my lap!
