Guitar for my daughter?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am going to buy my daughter a guitar for Hanukkah. She is 6 years old, and I am thinking of getting her a bass. She did say that she wanted a guitar, but I am unsure what type to buy her. I know an acoustic would be my first choice.

Would a First Act be okay?

If she said guitar, get her a guitar. No point getting something she won't want. Been there and done that! My son started on a 3/4 size Jay Turser. Not great, but did the trick. For (a lot) more cash you can get her a thinline Yamaha APX Yamaha APX500 Thinline Acoustic-Electric Cutaway and more 6 String Acoustic-Electric Guitars at GuitarCenter.com.. They're great instruments. Fender does, or did, make a nice thinline, Montara.

Why not go electric?? Either way, stay away from the First Act stuff, get her an instrument that will sound decent and she can use later on.

Peace,
Greg

Never buy a child something they don't want. If she wants a guitar, get one. She will be happy with a nice used guitar.

I have been in the same place and I can help with this question - I'd recommend a shallow body Ovation - my daughter got one and loves it! The Ovation acoustic/electric models are comfortable for girls to hold, and the necks aren't too wide for them.

Example: Ovation Applause Series AE148 Super Shallow Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar and more 6 String Acoustic-Electric Guitars at GuitarCenter.com.

That is one pretty guitar!

I'll bet there are some similar on Craigslist at half the price, and in nice shape. She will be just as happy with a clean used one as a new one. Get a hard case too, to keep it in good shape.

The biggest problem I see with a young one learning a stringed instrument is the strings. They hurt your fingers, and when you're six, there's probably not a lot of reason to fight through the pain or whatever. A classical guitar would solve the problem of the steel strings, if that were an issue.

Good point, and thanks everyone for the advice. One thought is to get her a recorder and she if she likes that.
