Guitar question on bass forum

Sign in to disble this ad
Apologies in advance for asking a guitar question on a bass forum.

I'm a bass player and my son has gotten interested in bass also over the past several months. Now my son (almost 13) has been getting more interested in electric guitar. I've got an old beater of a guitar he has been playing.

Question -- what is a good beginner's electric guitar? I am thinking a Squier Strat or Telecaster might be OK, but I am wondering if people have opinions on this. I am thinking of buying new and spending up to about $250.

Thanks.

That traitor, you should stop him.

Really though, my guitar playing friend says the Squire Strat "special deluxe" (I think that's what it's called), is a good starter guitar, I think it only comes as a package tho, with the amp and whatnot.

That is a good beginner package. A friend of mine just got a great deal on one for his first guitar.

Fender or Ibanez, whichever feels more comfortable to him. Between these brands there are numerous models that he can play. Bring him into a music store and have him play a bunch of guitars and whichever he likes best, buy it!

About 3 years ago I got my son a Michael Kelly for around $300.00 but from looking at the prices right now we either got a sweet deal or the prices have jumped quite a bit.

However, I believe you get what you pay for because that guitar sounds great -it has a nice, warm tone and can be tweaked tonally through a pretty wide range.

The quality is awesome as well.

Or, just sit your son down and explain to him bass is where it's at. j/k Tell him good luck.

looked for used
every once and awhile a used MIM Strat pops up on Craigslist and the seller has no clue
what it is " My boyfriend dumped me and left this here"

I started out on a Squier Strat and it lasted from when I was 16 until I was 35
if that means anything

Allways go used get a nice fender MIM from a pawnshop or craigslist
PRS SE's are really nice too they go up to about 6 to 700 new a bit more than you were looking to spend i know but they are very worth it (dont know what they are used)

St6arter packs most allways use guitars below the brands regular lowest price budget model. Stay away from starter pkg's is ussually excellent advice. Look for used guitars in your budget range and buy the one the kid likes the best out of those. Ibanez, Peavey, ESP Ltd, Epiphone, Jackson, & BC Rich all make decent lower price guitars gettable new in the $300 range. Of these the Epiphone set neck G400 and BC Rich's are the best deal out of the box without needing pup upgrades.

It's ok to post a guitar question; it just belongs in Miscellaneous, not Basses.

Thumbs up i think this is meant as a gift

tough to hand out`used' as a gift even tho' we all know a killer deal is always just a day away on c's list,a brand spankin' new setup fuels the pride so to speak, hand him a new or pristine axe!,i'd look at GCenter and either buy a starter outfit or a git and amp, cords etc.,,,i feel you'll get a WAY better amp,,a new axe and a used(but HOT amp) will give the young man something to play with, plus a cord longer than 8 ft is NICE!

i have a guitar but don't enjoy playing it on my bass amp,now when the neighbor brings his combo down and we jam=,love it!(has reverb, tremolo),,,i've seen pristine`used' strats for 99 bucks(yeah i know, they listed for that about a year ago),,,

it's the AMP,,,give him some options(tonally) and of course a set of ear phones(to give YOU some options tonally),,the starter pack amps,,hmmmm, nothing like an amp with options(can i say VYPYR?,,,had one should have kept it

good luck,it's all good no matter how many strings it has, keep those kids involved(that's what's important) you can buy him a bass NEXT christmas, then you'll have a Strat to tink on

and as far as amps go, a small fender combo would work for now. solid state. he'll grow out of it, but a practice amp never goes to waste.

keep in mind that any amp that says line 6 on it and cost less than 500 dollars is going to have NO resale value in a year.

and from there, the used market is a wonderful thing.

The Strat and Tele copies at Rondo are great. They will need a good setup first, but they're still a screaming deal.
I love my SX Tele.

Thank you for the suggestions. His birthday is January 12. I think I am going to have to wait for his input. We can do a father/son shopping special. If it's new, I'm thinking Squier, Epiphone or Ibanez. I like the idea of a used MIM Strat or Telecaster also, but I don't know what he'd prefer. I've already got an old Marshall mini-stack he can use as an amp. Either that or the old Fender Bassman 60 that I have been unable to unload on Craigslist.

I love my SX Tele.
+1. My SX Tele is a winner. After a good setup, it plays and sounds about as good as a MIM Fender.
