Guitar World's Bass Guitar Magazine

Was anyone else surprised to see Guitar World's Bass Guitar magazine shut down? I had no idea until I received a Guitar World magazine in the mail and thought it was a mistake. Then I saw a note about GWBG going out of business.

It's a shame, because it was a decent magazine. Now I'm left with Bass Player and Bassics. Anyone know of any other decent bass mags out there?

Wait, what? Really? When did this happen? I haven't gotten the guitar issue with a note about the bass shutting down. Well, what happens to those of us that subscribe to the guitar version already, do we get 2 copies of the guitar one? :/

It was announced about a month ago, the June issue with Geddy on the cover is the last issue. The remainder of subscriptions will be filled with Guitar World.

I liked that mag. At least they saved the best for last.

talk about irony....

the issue that I just got to replace Bass Guitar - the cover artist is Jack White from the White Stripes. Yeah, the band that doesn't have a bass player. Wow. I looked and saw 2 whole ads that were for bass players, with one review for a bass item...and the letter included said I "will never look back". What a crock of festering feces...

That's right - that just happened!

I feel like I just watched my kids get their butts kicked on the playground, and then had to watch my wife get fondled by a frickin dog...

Dude, Guitar World - they suck major bungholes

Man, what a major bummer. I was going to subscribe too.

Wonder if Ed Friedland is trying to jump back to BP.

Sad thing is it's the only Bass magazine for us folks down here in Australia.

Who has the most money on TB? ... Tom Bowlus! Mr Tom, make us a magazine please.

HAHA. Bowlus Print; I'd subscribe.

Oh, and is it weird that Tom Bowlus's initials are TB.

Not surprised. It was a pretty narrow-minded mag.

The last issue had Geddy Lee on the cover. Not a bad way to go out.

Songs were:
"By-Tor and the Snow Dog" - Rush
"Destroyer of Senses" - Shadows Fall
"The Ghost of Tom Joad" - Rage Against the Machine

I was more than a little surprised to see an issue of Guitar World instead Bass Guitar in my mailbox. Anyone know the inside story of why it went under?

I will admit that the majority of the mag's rock/metal focus didn't interest me much, but it did have its good points: Todd Johnson's and Ed Friedland's columns as well as Tom Bowlus' gear reviews.

Also Ed Friedland's youtube channel "BassGuitarMag" was insteresting, I hope he can keep on doing it somehow.

By The Way, the same thing happened to Acoustic Guitar branch; So I'll be getting 2 copies of Guitar World (one for Acoustic Guitar and one for Bass Guitar)

What makes them think we all want multiple copies of the same magazine?

That's what happens when they close all their magazines but one. Since they have to fulfill your subscriptions and only publish one magazine, you end up getting the same one twice. Personally, I think they should just refund whatever's left from the subscriptions and save the lame guitar mags for someone else.

I feel that would apply to the other magazines, not Bass Guitar...with the other magazines, Guitar One and Guitar World Acoustic - the same six string guitar applies. If however you are talking to a bass player and you refer to a 6 string bass, generally you would be refering to a bass tuned BEADGC. Also, if you applied 1/10th of the bull crap they talk about in the guitar magazines to bass, you would be (most likely) kicked out of your band for either overplaying or not following the function of the bass. I just don't see too much of a colleration. Also, being that the decision was made to bring up the number of columns, increase the song count, and increase the amount of reviews given in GW, the fact that there is no bass instruction column, and that the music listed basically trims the parts down for the bass to repeat fig A for bass, they knew what they were doing: Giving us bass players nothing for our money. Period. 1 review and 2 bass ads in a 200+ page magazine is not worth a subscription. If they get better, I may subscribe again, but having 1.5% total of a magazine is not worth the money. As it is, I' ve been bitching and also talking to them about their counting (6 songs with basslines is what the cover says, but they count a White Stripes song (which has no bass line); 5 doesn't equal 6 as far as I can remember........fuzzy math, perhaps????)
