Is this guy genuine? I'm not sure...

So, I've been speaking to a guy on the phone the last couple of days... he's interested in some gear I'm selling.

First of all on the phone he asked me to keep it by for him as he really needed it for his kid's xmas gift. Fair enough, I thought. Then he says he's a professional musician and music teacher, and he wants the gear for himself... so the story about the kid's xmas gift????

Anyway, we arranged for him to come over last night to check it out and he cancelled last minute as he said one of his kids was throwing up and he couldn't leave him with a babysitter. Which is pretty annoying, but if that's the true story it can't be helped.

So, he comes over today instead. I met him outside, and couldn't see any cars I didn't recognise although he says he drove here.

Wants about half the gear "for definite" and said he'd let me know this evening as he needs to talk to his band mate first (they would be buying that half together.) Fine... no problem I said.

So we're about to close the deal on the half he wants for definite, and he puts his coat on and then tells me he's "forgotten" his wallet, and that he won't be able to come back until tomorrow.

Damn, what is he playing at? I can't tell if he's genuinely incredibly disorganised, dodgy as hell or just can't be honest enough to say he doesn't wanna buy any of it. Is it just me that gets really ****** off with stuff like this?

Dodgy.
Tell him you're done devoting time to HIS schedule until he comes back with cash in hand.

Oh, I forgot to mention - he's one of the main gig organisers in the area... I'm reluctant to hack him off as he's got a lot of contacts in the bar scene in this small city, and don't wanna ruin my bands chances of getting gigs in the future...

it's the bane of sales guys....the beback.....it is said that if one had a nickel for every beback he'd have enough money to not have to bother selling anything......best to tell him straight up,first guy with the dough and it's gone.....holding anything requires a 25%,non refundable, time limited deposit....

I can't imagine so... he didn't really look around, just paid attention to the gear (my main bass etc was hidden well out of sight, I made sure of that.) The gear he was looking at was only around £350 in total... not really worth breaking in to a top floor flat for!

Dodgy, sounds to me like he's checking out the premises before he comes back and try to steal the stuff...then again It might just be me being paranoid...

My rhythm guitarist knows of him, has met him a few times at a couple of gigs. Said he's a nice bloke. And I have his full name.

Not sure about track record though.

Although I have just realised he mentioned he's seen my bands videos on facebook, so he knows I've got a Warwick stashed away in the back room. Balls. (Warwicks are worth a fair few quid in the UK)

Well the 1st thing is you said "So, he comes over today instead. I met him outside, and couldn't see any cars I didn't recognise although he says he drove here" Thats a sign of casing the joint, he doesn't want you to see his vehicle to be able to get his tag number and description, I would be very hesitant about dealing with this cat.....

Would it be worth it to talk to your local constable?

"This guy came over to see my gear, etc. etc. Should I be suspicious?"

At the least, it'll put a bug in the police's ear and you may get some hints about protecting your flat and gear.

This smells. If/when you meet again, bring a buddy - a big one. I've been through this myself - better to have backup when cash is changing hands.

Hi.

I'm happy as a bumble-bee that I don't live in the world of paranoia and fear. Real or imagined.

That explains it, to me anyway. The gig organisers tend to be total airheads when it comes down to simple things like meeting someone if they won't profit on that.

Wise. Over here You might get in trouble for that (everywhere I'd imagine).
