I try to keep my hands bone-dry, for the sake of keeping my bass clean. I want the neck to be in good shape/appearance, years from now, and i don't want any oils on it after I've thoroughly dried out my hands. I put lotion on after, when I'm done playing.

If your looking for a "slick" feel, then put Fast Fret on your strings, but don't wipe them down before playing.

I personally wouldn't put lotion on my hands before playing as I feel that would goober up your fret board over time.

I use cocobutter lotion on my finger tips every few days or so. My job requires extreme use of my hands so, sometimes my tips get serious calouses< sp? If my tips are too ruff i have a hard time getting a smooth attack.... so yea..... i use lotion from time to time.

Cleveland Eaton (played with Count Basie) used to wipe his strings with hand lotion to enable crazy slides, check out this clip with Basie and the Kansas city 5:

I can't do it. It makes my fingertips too 'soft' and I don't get the attack that I need to get my tone.

I use moisturizer in the winter when my hands get dry and anytime I feel a blister starting. It's more important for playing URB than BG.

No lotion for me. I gotta have dry fingers. It's unfortunate because my hands are so very dry, my knuckles often end up bleeding when I play. Ah well, such is the price of fame.
