Question Has anyone ever tried this?

So I was in a couple bands over this last year. One broke up so I started an instrumental band with two of my other musician friends. Soon they wanted to become a pop metal band like attack attack and bands like that. So I said **** that and now I'm in an odd position.

I recently started jamming with a drummer friend of mine (me on guitar and him on drums) and it's kind of working. I'm a decent guitarist. (We play a sort of jazzy, math rock instrumental kind of thing; hard to describe.) My guitar playing sounds pretty similar to my bass playing lol. Lots of tapping and odd chords mixed with weird start-stop dynamics. But guitar is just so boring to play for me. I love bass. I'm a bassist. I want to play my bass.

So what I'm wanting to do is play both. I'm thinking of investing in a looping pedal. (I really want an electro harmonix memory man). Then I'd loop some sort of guitar riff. Let it keep going then grab my bass and start playing over it. In my head I see this working out but I'm not too sure. Would you guys listen to a guitar/bass/drum duo? haha. Has anyone else on this forum tried anything similar?

Maybe a chapman stick is the answer.Guitar and bass lines played on the same instrument. Lots of tapping involved.

Check out El Ten Eleven. They do exactly what yo're talking about (and it's cool, too)

The memory man is not a looper, it's an analog delay. But they are great. I only mention this because it won't do what (it sounds like) you want it to.

Doesn't the memory man with hazarai feature a looper?

I've seen similar things done but here's what I'd suggest: Get a baritone guitar. It's sort of both a bass and guitar at the same time. Or even just get yourself another guitar player :P

Guitar players are a dime a dozen. Hire someone and pay him to play what you want. This way you have someone who will play what you want, you get to play bass, and you have creative control.
That's what I would do...

I like BIGmackie's idea. You'll have more flexibility by not being tied down to prerecorded tracks.

I would listen to that. Actually, I've been listening to a lot of OM lately (Stoner Bass/Drum duo) and they RIP.

I think it's totally possible with only bass and drums, you just need to know how to do it. Playing chords and using distortion is one way.

Yes, the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai has a limited looping feature. People call that one the SMM or SMMWH because when you just say the Memory Man, they think of the analog older brother of the SMMWH as it's been around forever.

That's what I and many other loopers do. A six-string bass and some good overdrive/distortion sounds and you've god a decent faux guitar.

Here's a few I've done with a looped drum line and distorted guitar-type lines:

One of the big problems with looping is that your parts can get very boring after repeating over and over for a while, which is why a multitrack looper can be a big help- they let you record different songs parts and switch between them.

I second that!

I also use the Roland RC-50 Looper + it has MIDI out to drive my Taurus III Bass Pedals (arpeggios: slow to fast).

Get the Stick with a MIDI pick up and you'll be set.

I used to have a band that was just bass & drums utilizing bass loops and then playing other parts & vocal melodies over the loops. Sounds similar to what youre doing here, I say go for it! Though as a suggestion, it might be fundamentally easier to loop a bass part and play guitar over the loop, I think that may give you more options.

Also, look into the BOSS RC looper, quite versatile and exactly what you need to pull your ideas off (though Im sure there are others that will work as well).

Math rock? Start at the square root of the one, then integrate the fourth over the interval from one to five. Take the derivative of the minor sixth and resolve to the modulus of the flatted seventh divided by the major third.
