Has anyone had to recover from hand surgery?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just had suregery on my right hand: had the joint at the base of my right thumb replaced/rebuilt (arthritic). So I have a cast/splint on it now, on tuesday I get full cast on it; and then I'll get a splint on it after a week or two--for a week or two.

For those of you that have had surgery on your hand: any problems playing your bass afterwards? How long before you could play again?

I was thinking that a P-bass with flats on it might be easier to start playing again? Any thoughts?

I am assuming that you play right handed, so I am going to say that it wont be that hard for you to get into it again. Just play with a light touch and no slapping for a while.

I broke a wrist pretty badly once (plucking hand)--not quite the same as hand surgery, but.. I started playing again two weeks after the pins were put in. The doctor encouraged it, and I'd play until it hurt and began to swell. It gradually got better, although my wrist was very week after the cast came off. Check with your doc and phys therapy people: they should be able to make a recommendation.

I had a friend who needed multiple cortizone shots in one hand after a minor alteration to his right hand plucking technique. It took him about a year, but he regained what he had. Although, the cortizone shots did nothing for him, nor did any of the other treatments.
