Has Roots Music Stifled Creativity?
For the past 5 years or so I have played bass for primarily roots music bands (bluegrass and rockabilly). These genres have formulaic bass parts that can't be strayed from too much. I recently stumbled across some old garageband recordings I had made and I was very impressed with the bass parts I had written. I don't think I could come up with those parts now. I feel like my creativity has been stifled by the genres I had been playing. I'm just curious if anyone has had a similar experience?

When I was playing bluegrass I was also playing jazz, so I didn't have that problem. But it stands to reason that if you only do very structured, basic lines for long enough, the more involved lines aren't going to be on the tips of your fingers.
