Question Have You Ever Re-Written an Original Bassline?

I've always kinda wondered about this, so I figured I'd ask.

Does anyone ever re-write basslines of popular music? I don't mean covering a tune and putting your own little twist on it. I mean removing the original bassline from the mix and recording your own brand new (as different as possible) bassline in it's place.

I hear some songs and think the bass couldn't have been written better for the song. I hear other songs and think, "what a boring bassline" and wonder how a different bassline would sound. Even if the original bass is good, how would different brains and hands change the song.

So, does anyone do it?

Does anyone want to give it a shot? Pick a song, any song and record your own bass. Don't like InsertName's bassline? Let's see what you've got! Post a soundclip.
