Absolutely! Viola da gamba's are quite often 7 strings too, and can even be more. There's an 11 string Viola da gamba here at Stanford in the instrument collection.

They're also called viols.

Are maple fingerboards common for this instrument ?

Maple boards were actually the standard for all stringed instruments until trading made ebony available.

Hi.

Another yes, I've seen 'em.

Not for that price though, but the Chinese mfg origins explains it.

The "traditional" FB material for virtually all the classical stringed instruments is ebony AFAIK, but the cost usually isn't justified in lower end examples.

Edit:Big B., really? All the sources I've seen has pointed to ebony.

This.

I have a family friend with a very early violin with a maple fingerboard.
