Question He Is Legend bassist's rig --> tone

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone have any info regarding He Is Legend bassist Matt Williams' rig? I'm thinking specifically as heard on their most recent (and probably final) record It Hates You?

I love that grindy tone. I wouldn't want it all the time, but I can certainly dig it and would like to experiment with it.
Is that sound something that would be considered a fairly typical Ampeg SVT-produced tone?

Yeah, I already saw that. So he apparently used a Peavey head years and years ago on the I Am Hollywood record. That doesn't really help me. His tone is significantly different at times on It Hates You, which is what I'm primarily interested in.

Hey boss, this is Matt Williams from He Is Legend.

I actually used an old Music Man HD 150 (I believe that's the correct model) to record the bass for "It Hates You." It is one of the many heads they have in-studio at Warrior Sound, where we recorded that record. I played my Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass (Mexican) through that head and an Ampeg SVT 8x10 speaker enclosure. I also ran a Fulltone Bass-Drive MOSFET in conjunction with that setup. All that combined is where that beautiful crunch comes from, haha.

But my personal rig that I use for He Is Legend consists of a Gallien-Krueger 2001 RB Bass amp and a Gallien-Krueger Neo 4x12 Speaker Enclosure, as well as multiple pedals.

Hope that helped!

Holy cow. I'm speechless.
Thanks for the personal response!

I feel I should mention I'm a huge fan of He Is Legend, but I guess that kind of goes without saying considering I made this thread in the first place.
Just as a side note, you and Chris Wolstenholme are the two players that gave me the desire to invest in a fuzz pedal. (although now I find out it was a Fulltone Bass-Drive Mosfet! haha )

Anyway, since I have you, care to share what your general setup was in recording I Am Hollywood? Was it the Peavey head seen in the video for "The Seduction" that people have referred to?

It was indeed the Peavey head that you can see in the video for "The Seduction." I used it on that record for lack of anything else to use, haha. It was a Peavey Firebass 700, which I have since parted ways with. My rig back then was the Peavey Firebass head with an Ampeg SVT 8x10 cab, still used the Fender Mexican Deluxe Active Jazz.

Word.

Well I'd say it sounded pretty damn good considering it was "for lack of anything else to use." I love the bass tone on that record.

Heard via Twitter about the new He Is Legend record to be released next year by the way, and I am stoked, man!
