I have just gotten back onto playing and just got back on this forum after a 5 year absence. But one thing i have always noticed about this forum is that it seems like us with the less expensive gear are looked down upon.
and thought of as a good player. I also dont understand why you all have to see pics of gear. its like showing off. I dont like to show off and so what if i play with less expensive gear. Does it make me a bad player because I dont have a Sadowsky with a quilted maple top or a gallien Krueger amp.

Of course your going to see people show their stuff off, thats one of the main reasons for the forums. I don't think most people look down on others with lesser gear, thats just stupid in my opinion. If they do, I think it also speaks of them as a player.

I doesn't matter how many couture basses you have. Of course it doesn't hurt if you got one. Just have fun, and welcome back to the G.A.S.=) |

| | | | Nothing wrong with posting pic's. I rather enjoy seeing what others have.
Putting down those with less expensive gear? I personally have never seen anybody here being put down for that. (What an arrogant thing for anybody to do, anyway). Besides, if someone has less expensive gear maybe it's a preferance. Or maybe someone loves to play and learn but all they can comfortably afford is something that costs a few hundred dollars.
That "cheap bass" just might mean the world to someone. |

Also please note that I tend to not judge players unless it's necessary; for example, when I'm auditioning them. Even though I have made exceptions, and played with cats who had gear at either extreme of the spectrum, I generally find it disconcerting if a dude shows up to my audition toting several thousand $$$ more or less than the rest of us in gear.
This goes both ways, of course, in that I typically also feel weird if I show up to an audition with equipment that is wildly excessive as compared to the band's, or if mine is significantly sub-standard.
Call it snobbery if you like, I can handle it. But it's just one useful tool to help you gauge an otherwise unknown entity in whom you will be placing a significant degree of trust for an undefined time period.

regardless, we don't much like any hating in any direction, so if you see anything please report it and we'll investigate. folks are allowed to express their opinions, but not at the expense of other people's instruments.

Can't really say I even ran into it when playing out or auditioning. I've found most people are interested in seeing what you've got by way of kit. But it doesn't matter at all once you start playing. If you play well, you get immediate respect. And nobody cares if you're playing a custom Alembic through an SVT stack or a Squire P-Bass through a GuitarCenter resurrected Acoustic combo amp. "If the sound is there - it's square."
I've got good stuff in my collection, and I have brand/models some would class as "junk."
I don't care. And neither does anybody I play with. Because I can get good (and usable) sounds out of every piece of equipment I own.
And so can a lot of other bassists.

Don't sweat the gear. Just keep playing. |

Come to think of it, for as long as I've been here I don't think I've ever been put down for my talent level either - and I'd deserve to be put down far more for that *far more* than for any gear I've ever had.
