A friend of mine and former bandmate is the soundman at one of the rock clubs, so I went to see him and hang out last night. I arrived between the 2nd and 3rd sets, and was wondering what was with the stage setup. In one corner were two Marshall 4x12s topped by a Crate Blue Voodoo head. Next to that was an SWR Megoliath with 550x pushing it. On the other side of the drums were 2 SWR Goliath IIIs, on top of which sat a Mesa Dual Rec and a Peavey 5150 head. Turns out the lead guitar player plays the Mesa and Peavey heads through the SWR 4x10s. Not only did he have one of the worst guitar sounds I've ever heard, but the bass player (Euro Spector 5 with aforementioned SWR) had one of the worst bass sounds I've ever heard. My friend at the soundboard just about gave up on them after the first set. They turned up between just about every song, using full stacks in a club where a mic'd 1x12 combo for guitars and maybe a 2x10 for bass is more than enough. Another example where it takes little to no talent to be a "professional" musician.
Sorry, that's probably pretty incoherent. Just something that's been bugging me all day.
