Help! Blistered Fingers and Need to Play

Sign in to disble this ad
Played a show last night and my on stage sound wasn't quite loud enough...instead of turning up a bit I just dug in a little harder. When I realized I was blistering it was already way too late (we were having a good time!)
Got a show tomorrow night and have two large blood blisters...lucky they didn't tear (I think b/c my callus's were built up enough)...What do I do? Got a show tomorrow, but more important, have a really big show next Friday..if I suck tomorrow it's worth it to be 100% for next week.
Drain them? Wrap them in something? With What? Play with a pick which I've never done in the 15 years of playing bass? I tried and I'd sound like **** and way outta the pocket.
Suggestions?

Play with the side of your thumb. Not as fast, but gives your fingertips a rest. Your hand position will be a bit different, but it's doable.

I had always wondered why the thumbrest was below the strings on my first bass. It's to brace the hand if using pick or thumb. (I wanted to move it above the strings, but changed basses instead.)

You didn't hear this from me but.....get a tube of crazy glue. Don't get it into your blood stream "the inside of the blister" but pull the skin together where it's cracked and glue it all back. Prick a hole in the blister so when it drains the hole is not on a side that's pulling on the string that will make it larger. So it's draining out every time you hit the string. Super or crazy glue gets me through gigs. I grabbed a piece of glass a month ago, I pulled it out of the bone in my pointy finger glued it and played a gig. Hurt like a sob but no bleeding!

A pin plus some rubbing alcohol to clean it. The rubbing alcohol will also help dry it out.

Personally, I'd start working that pick and figuring out what you can do with it.

If it were on your fretting hand- drain it, super glue and "man up." On your right hand... not only is it going to hurt, you're playing is going to seriously suffer.

Play closer to the neck, roll off your tone- start thinking of your rhythm.

So you have blisters, welcome to the world of bass playing.

Play everyday for one hour.
Build your fingers up.

I like to practice at low volume.
So my hands and fingers, do the work, not my amp.

Save the volume for the gig.

Some people use super glue, for a quick fix?
But once your hand, and fingers get in shape.
It will be better.

One option: tape your fingers.

How to tape fingertips

I'd probably drain the blisters first, then tape.
