help me choose a guitar

Sign in to disble this ad
hi there, fellow TB'ers. i've been playing bass for about 4 yrs now, and have started to develop quite an interest for the guitar, and want to buy one. i don't have much money to spend, and wont do much more than playing in my room, but i'd like to get a nice axe. a friend lent me his MIM strat so i could play around and see if i get along with it. although the neck is confortable and the maple fretboard is great, i still feel the guitar is a bit small. is this a strat-related issue? are there certain models that have a slightly longer scale and wide fretboard?

a few guide lines for my choosing:

i haven't got anything against single coils, but humbuckers might be a plus. i like maple fretboards, but i'll go around it if the rest of the guitar is really good. i don't want a Les Paul. having a whammy bar doesn't matter much.

i hope you can help me, thanks.

In a similar situation I bought my first guitar about 2 years ago. It was a PRS Custom ($500) and it was a screamer. I can't tell you off hand what kind of pick-ups it had but the PRS guitars are worth looking into . Good luck

the butterscotch blonde finish sure looks nice.. and i find gloss necks to be just as pleasant as satin ones.

All electric guitars will feel small after playing bass for long periods of time.
I suggest looking at guitarfetish.com
They have excellent cheap guitars, and now sell basses, too. I got it from the other thread.

agreed on that, but a wider fretboard might help with that.

Look at Fender Telecasters or Telecaster styled guitars from other manfacturers. There are a ton of them out there ranging from about $150 new for copies offered by Guitar Fetish or Jay Turser to $250-350 Fender Squiers which offer great value to MIM Standards for $450-$500.

Single coil pickups, no whammy bar, traditional maple necks on most models and a guitar with a very unique sound. I've been a bassist for over 35 years and the only guitars I play at gigs when I'm asked to play guitar are my Telecasters. Great sounding guitars and generally quite a few used ones out there to choose from as well.

Good hunting.

If I were a guitarist, I'd have an esquire tele with a lipstick bridge pickup and a B-bender installed.

I'm going to work from last to first here.....

1 11/16" wide at the nut is by far the most common width you're going to find, including the vast majority of Strats. There are a very few Strats that I'm aware of that have 1¾" necks but those are usually pretty hard to find. Something to keep an eye out for might be a Robert Cray sig model, which has a pretty beefy neck shape (although not much wider @ the nut), and FWIW is also set up with a hardtail bridge instead of a tremolo. Since it's MIJ the price won't be too outrageous. Other possibilities along these lines would be a Jimmy Vaughn sig model, Kenny Wayne Shepard sig model, or a '62 Hot Rod

Another tack, within the basic Fender paradigm, would be one or another sort of Telecaster. Some of the reissues come stock with pretty beefy necks, although again this is usually more a matter of thickness than width

You can get wider necks from Warmouth or USACG if you're really bound and determined to go that route, but the odds of finding even a 1¾" neck on an off-the-rack electric guitar are not good.....

As far as longer scale, you're already acquainted with the longest scale length of the "standard" 6-strings: the Fender Strat/Tele scale @ 25½". The majority of Gibsons are substantially shorter than that @ 24¾" scale, and IIRC most others fall somewhere within those two lengths (PRS, for instance). Anything longer than 25½" scale will probably be a baritone or other such oddball

Yep. For a better sense of perspective on "small and cramped" compared to your bass, borrow a mandolin for a little while

after some research i got the sense that the strat's scale was the longest i'd find, yes. can you still tune baritone guitars to standard tuning? maybe i should just play the heck out of the strat and get used to it..

If the tuning is the only thing that matters, get a 6 string piccolo bass

You might want to take a look at these, although I have no personal experience with them: ELECTRIC GUITARS - B&CH Music
