what's up talkbass,

it's been a while since i've been here, but i return in dire need of your knowledge.

i remember listening to certain types of music (like weather report, bill evans, lee morgan) that made me extremely excited with and engaged in the music. there was a certain level of involvement as a listener that used to exist for me, but with modern music I am having a hard time finding this passion. i know good stuff exists, but i can't find it.

admittedly, i'm a college student who spent the last two years listening to what's hot for college students (so figure stuff from hype machine, music blogs, all that), and i'm now realizing that this music does nothing for me, at least compared to my old music collection.

so out of curiosity, what are you guys listening to now? it doesn't have to be jazz.

thanks,
natselection

update: i'm going through each / every one, one album at a time. thanks for the recommendations!

Recently rediscovered Blind Melon.. not jazz, but definitely worth a listen.

If you're looking for "jazz" I defiantly recommend Man Man. I've been in love with this band for years. Great musicians writing great music. No doubt I would recommend them to anyone who says they can appreciate music. Their new album is fantastic. It's definitely a great cap to their last 3. Pretty soon the head writer is said to be coming out with a "doom- wap" album. They are very interesting characters. You should give them a shot.

As New Orleans natives The Neville Brothers, The Meters can not help but pepper in the city's jazz heritage into their Afro-Caribbean Funk.

Recently I've been listening a lot to this song : ‪Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek‬‏ - YouTube

Tonight I'm going to a concert with Low. This one is from their new album C'mon : ‪Low - Especially Me (not the video)‬‏ - YouTube , but I would really like to recommend their album Things We Lost In The Fire

Lately, Ive been listening to The Music's Discography as a refresher for their final ever gig which was on Saturday (they absolutely nailed it, what a send off). They had all the potential to be big stage arena fillers with there dance-able beats and Led Zeppelin sized riffs, but never quite made it big time through personal troubles and lack of record company support. Ive seen alot of the big name bands live but none of them packed the high-octane energy and atmosphere like The Music delivered. RIP!!

‪The Music "Freedom fighters" con letra‬‏ - YouTube

not Jazz... more along the Space Rock vibe!

Chuck Mangione is something I would look into. Some pretty killer basslines in his songs.

And, more Weather Report. Can never have enough WR.

If we can go into other styles, check out progressive rock(Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Focus, Comus, Rush to name a few). Many prog musicians are also accomplished players in the jazz field as well.

And, Panzerballet as well. New band, but a really good concept. It's jazz/metal fusion.
