Help me pick some classic rock COVERS for my band.

Sign in to disble this ad
My main band plays mostly classic rock covers. We are lead female singer, one guitar player, bass, drums and now keys. We are willing to do less well-known covers as well if they are good songs.

We are in process of getting a piano/keyboardist so any songs we add to our set list should have either piano or organ in them. I also think that they have to be danceable songs. For example, I was thinking of doing "green eyed lady" by sugarloaf or "money" by pink floyd, but i dont think you can really dance to them. I am not a dancer so its somewhat difficult for me to tell. I think they should be upbeat, danceable songs, because when people are dancing they enjoy themselves and get thirsty thus drink beer. this make bar owners happy and we will be more likely to get more gigs with this reasoning.

here are the songs we do that have keys:

Break on Thru - doors

7. Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight - rem
8.
10. Get Back – beatles
11. Symphony in C - cake
12. Hush – deep purple
13.
16. Back in the USSR – Beatles
17.
21. Roadhouse Blues – doors
22.
23. Taking Care of Business - bto
24.
25. Light my fire - doors
26.
28. Drugs in my pocket – monks
29. suffergette city – david bowie
30.
31. Incense and peppermints – strawberry alarmclock

Alot of these songs are not what I would call danceable so we need to add songs that are danceable. BTW, we have about 36 songs, but i just wanted to post the ones with keys. We already do 3 doors tunes and 4 beatles songs so we dont want to do anymore of those groups.

here are a few songs that i think we should add:

call me - blondie (is there keys in this?)
even the losers - tom petty
saturdays alright - elton john

so could you please suggest cover songs we could do that:

1. have organ or piano
2. are danceable
3.fit our genre (not that important)

much appreciated!

Something by The Rolling Stones; Satistfaction, Brown Sugar, Paint it black, etc etc

"Queen: Crazy little thing called love" is very nice too.

Then why was Jonsey bangin' away on the piano throughout that whole song?!?!

Every Pink Floyd song has keyboard parts in it...that's why Rick Wright was in the band. You could do ANY Pink Floyd song and impress, although not all will be danceable.

Try looking into the Allmans....all of those songs have keyboard parts AND are pretty dancable. You could do the same for a lot of Grateful Dead tunes as well.

Also, if you want to tackle Zeppelin, look into Zep II, III and IV...there are some excellent tracks there with keyboard parts that would be fun to cover.

And, while this doesn't necessarily count as "classic rock", anything from the Black Crowes would probably fit into your setlist, and virtually all of those songs have keyboard parts.

Lola - The Kinks
Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith (maybe not "classic" rock, but would be good for a slow dance rock song)

Why not just work the keys into the existing songs? You have no rhythm guitarist, the keys can take that roll in most songs. Also, let the keys have solos where there would normally be a guitar solo. Or let both take a solo.

Most keyboard players with any band experience at all will be used to fitting the keys into a song. Give them some room to do it.

P.S. You play Courage by Tragically Hip... that is my favorite Hip song to play. We don't play any Hip though, the Singer/Lead guitar says they are too hard to do.

Sorry, you're right! but Rock and roll by the led has the piano kickin ass throughout the song

Maybe some guns n roses? on a few of their live albums, axle blends a piano on numerous songs.

Yes - Roundabout
Iron Butterfuly - In A Gadda Da Vida
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Call Me the Breeze

I just kind of thought of a couple interesting songs where everyone can have fun and keys are present. However, the first 2 aren't exactly danceable, but maybe our opinion of danceable is different.

Electric Six - Gay bar

I know it doesn't have keys but come on, it doesn't get any more danceable than that, I'm sure you could work keys in there somehow.

some ideas...
Never Been Any Reason - Head East
Knock On Wood - Eddie Floyd, et al
Respect / The Weight / Chain Of Fools - Aretha
Rescue Me - Fontana Bass
Hot Child In The City - Nick Gilder (I think it has some keys? a cheesy song but it works every time).
Lady Marmalade - LaBelle version
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina And The Waves.
Would I Lie To You - Eurythmics
What I Like About You - check out Lillix's version
Mustang Sally (depends on female singer)
