Help with Synth (not bass)

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm just in the midst of starting a new original band with a bunch of really good people I recently met. One of them is a woman who wants to play keyboards/synth for us, however she doesn't really own a synthesizer, but does have a pretty professional Korg keyboard, like an electric piano, that does basic piano sounds with a few strings, organ, etc, patches. She wants to get something to add onto it that will give her all the synthy sounds that one might need for an alternative/prog rock band (think Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Skillet, etc) but doesn't really know where to start looking.

We have talked about the possibility of looking at some software for her that she could use via her computer (the keyboard does have USB hookups, etc) but honestly we're both at a loss.

We're going to go into the local music emporium (Long and McQuade) this weekend to talk to their keyboard people about it, but I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice as to a somewhat affordable solution - be it a hardware synth module or software MIDI hookup, or whatever else might do the job.

Thanks!

Dave smith stuff is tops. Theres a bunch of patches in there for NIN stuff super dark and awesome. His mono evolver, poly evolver and prophet 8 are awesome. The new moog little phatty is awesome too. On the lower end the alesis stuff and the novation stuff is great.

I'm assuming this is hardware you are talking about, not software, eh?

Yea sorry all hardware. Whats your budget? Im not sure if I would rely on a laptop to not crash when im playing. Thats just me though, plenty of people do it. Most of the dave smith stuff is a grand and up, except the mono evolver. The mono evolver and the moog are mono phonic synths, meaning only one note at a time. I suggested those cuz if shes already got a great digital keyboard maybe a mono phonic synth would be a good fill in.
