Help us choose a new band name?

Hey folks,

My band, SanSerif, has been together for three years this December. We're a very different band then we were back then, though. After three lineup changes, one of which included a death from a car accident, we've morphed from a five-piece to a three-piece, and our music has changed from serious, heavy-rock music into a bluesy/funky sound.

We play pretty upbeat stuff, with a lot of feeling, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. We try to have a lot of fun and just play good stuff.

Let me give you a quick rundown of the three of us, so you can have a better idea of what might fit.

Our frontman's name is Church Zumwalt. He's 18, popular with the ladies, and a very good guy. He's an amazing guitar player, very technical but not esoteric. He's currently in school on a full ride studying vocal performance, with a minor in classical guitar. His playing is a lot like Eric Johnson, Mike Inziger (sp?) from Incubus, and The Edge. He's a classically trained singer, but stylistically he's very smooth and melodical.

I'm 22, and I play bass. My background is in blues, rock, and funk guitar, and I bring a lot of that to my bass playing. I have a pretty modern sound. but I try to be solid at the same time. Since we're a three piece, and because of my background in funk and jazz guitar, my playing is a lot more out-front and chordal than you'd generally see from a rock bassist.

Our new drummer, Justin, is also 18, but he doesn't seem like it at all. He's very mellow and just a really great, mature guy. He's studying music education, and although he plays rock with us, he also has 14 years of background on classical piano, and he's *amazing* at jazz drumming.

To get an idea of our sound, you can hear some of our songs on our website,

http://www.sanserifband.com/music/

and on our Myspace,

http://www.myspace.com/sanserifband

We just recorded our first full-length album, and the cuts on our site are rough mixes from that recording. We just feel like this is a good time and place to have a fresh start.

One of the songs on our new album is called "Treasure Junkies," and we were considering naming the album that, as well. We were talking about it and actually like "Treasure Junkie" as a band name. Of course we would rename the song (the title doesn't appear in the song lyrics) and the album name if we choose it for our band.

We're looking for something fun, memorable, obviously not in use, and easy to say and spell. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated - even if we don't use something exactly as-is, your suggestion might inspire the perfect name, so feel free to post as many as you'd like.

I put together a list of names similar to Treasure Junkie and sent them to Church. After review, he said that he really likes Treasure Junkie best. The domain treasurejunkie.com is in use - it appears to be some sort of We-Sell-It-For-You service. Anyway, it's a free placeholder page right now, and it might be possible to buy the domain. Should we look into that?

TreasureJunkieBand.com is available. Our current website is SanSerifBand.com - sanserif.com is also a placeholder site, and the owners wanted $2,000 for the name, so we passed on it. We haven't had any problem with people finding us (that we're aware of) with just sanserifband.com.

What do you guys think of Treasure Junkie? What does it make you think? If you saw "Live Tonight at The Blue Note: Treasure Junkie," what type of music would you expect? I'm not convinced yet, and of course our new drummer has a say as well. We plan to have a meeting about it this coming weekend.

By the way, here's the list of similar names. What do you think? Do you like Treasure Junkie best?

Thanks very much,

Dave

Thanks, Mark. I posted this on the Fender Forum, too, and one comment was that it sounded too "Disney." We'll definitely think about that.

I really don't like SanSerif, though. It doesn't roll off the tongue well, and the spelling is funky. I've named several other bands, and helped name them for friends, and I generally try to avoid two stressed syllables in a row. For example, my friend Ruth Acuff has the stage name "Ruthie Acuff," simply because it rolls off the tongue better (there is one non-stressed syllable in between the two stressed ones).

Ruth A-cuff versus Ruthie A-cuff
San-Ser-if versus Trea-sure Jun-kie

Any ideas?

Dave

I like the word "Junkie" in the band name. "Junkie" rolls off the tongue, it has a cool "street" connotation, and it rhymes with "funky".

Just find a different word to go in front of it. Rhythm Junkie? Eh, maybe too easy. But something's bound to fit there.

I saw that and thought 'Rhythm Monkey' sounded better. But on reflection, it would be better as an instrumental song title than a band name.

I often used names that were interesting but not right for a band name as instrumental titles. Like 'Surfers From Iowa' 'Lassie Loves Garfield' and 'Raised By Weasels Only To Be Killed By Science'.

Treasure Junkie is okay as a band name, but not great. Backyard Treasure is better. Rhythm Junkie is better.
