Herbie Hancock at Hollywood Bowl last night

The first half, he did jazz pieces with Esperanza spalding on bass (except for the first tune which had Nathan East). Terence Blanchard was on the trumpet and Wayne Shorter on sax.

The rhythm section was solid but Terence and Wayne seemed to be played all the time--even when one of them was soloing, the other one was noodling something. I wished they'd be more tasteful.

The section half was something else. Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Pino Palladino on bass. You get the idea. The first few pieces were outright funk. And the other pieces were from Herbie's imagine project--Peter Gabirl pieces, John Lennon, etc. Good stuff.

Pino was playing his signature P-bass. And, frankly, his tone was boomy and muddy, very undefined. Vinnie was awesome.

Overall, good show. They will be performing again in March at Disney hall.

THANKS for that report - what a great group of players. Wish I could have been there (long commute).

Did Esperanza stay on upright throughout her set, or did she also play electric? Also, do you know who the drummer was?

She only played the upright, and Vinnie was the dummer during the first set as well.

I liked how she can step back and just lay down grooves, even though she is a solo artist with a few records. I do wish that she sang.

The funk pieces were as solid as they come. Frankly, I wish the entire set was just that.

Yeah, I have to say - the few times I've seen Pino live, I've been let down - - And I'm a big fan... It's not that his playing was bad, it the sound - muddy and hard to hear. If that's what he's going for, great... but somehow, I doubt it.

No matter - I would have liked to see that show. Herbie is *one of those guys*, ya know?

Yeah, I mean for the funk pieces, the music was yearning for a well defined tone for more percussive playing. And you can still get that with a PBass but he just didn't have it. I've heard Stanley Clarke and whole lot of bassists at the Hollywood Bowl--so it's not the venue.

I kept telling my (nonmusician) friends how this guy is awesome but since you couldn't really hear any of his playing, I had a difficult time convincing them.

Nathan East was playing his signature 6-string Yamaha through an Augilar DB750 and Aguilar GS cabs. He sounded solid.
