Hey sorry mods i didnt know where to post this
I am currently looking for a "high end" well padded gig bag for my new expensive bass. I was hoping to get some suggestions on some good brands to look at. I have been using one of the cheapest models i could find at guitar center because of one annoying reason.
I am about 6 foot 5 and all these new gig bags have "back pack" type shoulder straps. Well, these straps usually join the rest of the bag around the midpoint of the bag. This means the bag ends up sitting very high on my back and makes in impractical for a tall guy like me to expect to make it thru any dorrway with necking the neck of my bass clean off.
Any suggestions...I searched google but most of the pics do not show the back of the bag which is my main concern.

You can also do what I do - just sling one of the straps over your shoulder to carry it.

I usually have one other bag on my shoulder so i am kinda just looking for a bag with one strap that joins the case at a high point.
Thanks for your suggestions so far...keep em coming

| | | | +1 on InCase. The Sadowsky PortaBag is fabulous also. It seems that the ProTec version of these 'semi hard side' bags is the best bang for the buck at this point. |

I checked out the website and they look really cool. What about the weight. Does it bother any of yuz guyz. 10 pounds seems like a lot for a gig bag

I don't really use them much. however, I have an under cover double gig-bag that is very well padded. I also have a LowEnd leather gig bag which is also very nicely padded. I am 6'8 and I just lower the straps on the gig bag until it fits comfortably for me. http://www.thelowend.net go here and check out the LowEnd stuff. Brian is great to deal with.

I have one but I don't use it anymore because it doesn't fit my main bass and it's also rather big and cumbersome. I just got a custom made Mooradian gig bag for my Guild Starfire and it's great. The backpack straps are long--I'm 6'2" or so and I don't have any problems getting through doorways with it, although it's also a short scale bass and a smaller bag. Mooradian

This is so the 'lumbar' type padding sits in the right place on your lower back. This makes them VERY comfortable to walk with, but you will bang into the top of door jams, etc. if you aren't careful.
The Sadowsky bag is lighter than the InCase. I don't find the weight of the single InCase bag a problem at all, and have used one as my main gig bag for quite a few years now. However, I had the two bass DUB bag for a short while, and the weight of that was a killer to me... like having a third bass in the bag.
Unlike the Low End bags, etc., the InCase Slim and Sadowsky bag (and I assume the similar Protec bag.. can't remember the exact name of that one) are true 'bag/case' hybrids... hard sides.. MUCH more protection than a standard bag IMO. I feel comfortable throwing an expensive bass (carefully) in an equipment van in one of these cases.
IMO and IME.
Edit: Per the above post, I have not found a bass that will not fit in the Slimbag (the InCase Tour bag was a different story). However, if you have a very 'long' bass (i.e., longer than a full size Jazz Bass), the Sadowsky Porta Bag has an extra strip of padding on the inside bottom of the case that can be removed to fit super long instruments.. nice. I also like the strap system on the Porta Bag bettern than the current SlimCase. The Sadowsky straps are very similar to the older SlimCase. The newer SlimCase has the very heavy duty 'alpine backpack' system like the DUB bags.

I own 3. A Sadowsky Incase, Undercover double bag, and the latest Sadowsky version(not sure who makes it). I use the double bag when I need to haul 2 but use the latest Sadowsky bag the rest of the time. The incase is cool, too. The incase is the smallest of the 3. I think the latest Sadowsky bag makes the most sense as far as carrying it and the storage areas. Hope this helps

These really make these bags similar to a hard case versus the more 'glovelike' fit of a standard bag. And, since the case has hard sides, your don't have the case pressing against the tuning keys, constantly knocking the bass out of tune.
These are very nice designs IMO, and also have more pocket space than most bags. |

However with a 3000 dollar custom coming in it seems like i should take every precaution in keeping it as cherry as possible.
The InCase bag looks great but it does seem like 10 pounds is a little much for frequent gigging. Plus it is probably more than i want to spend. The multiple strap system is nice but i think it is more than i need because i cant logically see using the backpack system ever.
The sadowsky bag is 7.5 pounds and a little less money. The other thing that appeals to me about that bag is that it it has the extra strap loop that is higher up on the bag and looks exactly like what i need for height purposes.
I guess the Sad. bag would be better for my liking. However i am also interested in some of the custom route options as well.
Does anybody use a sadowsky bag with a singlecut bass. Any problems?

SUPER expensive (about $700.00 as I recall) but gorgeous, built like a tank, still looks great, extremely classy (especially with a pair of MTD 635's in there), offers great protection, and will undoubtedly last longer than me and my descendants, and probably theirs as well.
Cheers,
