hip-hop/funk typical progression

Sign in to disble this ad
hi,

I play in a jazz trio and since i'm a bassist, I should no several other grooves, like shuffles, latin, etc...

There is just this one problem... i'm trying to analyse some hip hop rythm grooves (I'm trying to check what to do... what not). I was wondering, is there any progression typical to a half-time swing type groove... (if some of you are wondering, its a bit like Donald Fagen's stuf... some toto....etc...) (the drummer's hi-hat or cymbal is double the time of a jazz swing groove) it may be the same as straight eight hip-hop... I've heard of a few progression but for hip-hop, i'm tired of just using a 12 bar blues... it just sounds to usual...

Thanks

jazzyteen
