Home stereo speaker replacement help.

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some help. I have a home stereo system that is fairly old. The system itself is fine but I need to replace the woofers in the speakers. I have a pair of floor stand speakers that have 2 tweeters, one 4 inch woofer and two 10 inch woofers. It is listed as 8 ohms. I need to replace both the woofers in both speakers. does it matter the make/model/ohms etc. of the woofer? will it be guarenteed to fit? is it possible that it might not fit with my screw holes?

I can get pictures if you need them.

You can replace the woofers with a pair from Parts Express but how well they'll work is a crap shoot. Whether you have to drill new holes is the least of your problems. Loudspeakers are designed as a whole, with specific woofers, midranges, tweeters, crossovers, cabinets all designed to work together. There's no way to know the exact specs of the woofers you have. If you just buy decent inexpensive woofers from Parts Express chances are they'll work OK. Ohms is the most important spec - the back of the woofers should state the ohmage of the actual drivers. And make sure you have two woofers, not one woofer and one passive radiator.

Why do you need to replace the woofers? Has the foam surround for the cones deteriorated? You know, that can be replaced, and it's easy and inexpensive. Do a google search.

two of the speakers are completly broken and one is half way there. The two that are demolished... you can take the cone itself out. I have no idea how it happened.

edit:I just checked my speakers and they dont say the ohms on the back...And I think I have a woofer and passive radiator because only one has wires.

Yup. Parts Express sells passive radiators also. I have no idea what ohmage you would use for the actual drivers on an 8 ohm speaker system. I'd guess 8 ohm. It's worth a try. I'd give a call to PE's 800 number and ask for advice. I'll bet they can help you pick out replacement drivers that would work well. Best case scenario, you end up with significantly better sounding speakers than you started with!
