How can I reproduce the tone on the bass intro here?
I've done lots of messing with my mids and tiny bits of grit/overdrive but got nothing yet.

He has some kind of chorus on, or he's playing an 8 string. At the very least, reverb. Either way, it doesn't sound (to me) like anything that can be replicated without effects. Check out some cheap effects pedals (even guitar ones) and mess around with em.

Chorus + delay/echo, and brand new roundwound strings.
