how to develop "feel"

Sign in to disble this ad
hi I'm new to this forum. been pleying for 3 years now, no band at the moment (that blows)

Do you know any way that you could train your improvisational skills? I've been starting to play a little Rush lately, and one cornerstone in his playing is his playing around the roots. I feel that it would be better and maby more fun (don't get me wrong, to play Rush is a blast ) to add my won touches on the songs, instead of just copying all of the fills and melodies presicely you know?

Step one: Go to archive.org and search for Grateful Dead.
Step two: Choose from among their 2000+ shows avaliable for free stream.
Step three: Listen to Phil Lesh play those songs.

listen to a bunch of different music. then try and cop all the basslines and licks on all the albums. then jam with a bunch of different people for as long and as many times as you can. repeat for a good amount of time (couple of months). then you will starting getting "feel".

Excellent advice. This will certainly exemplify feeling a song. For specific dates check out 2/27/69 and listen to Mountains of the Moon>Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Turn on Your Lovelight. Also look for 3/17/68's Caution (Do not stop on Tracks).
