Like clockwork, I made the journey to Guitar Center today for one of their famous "List" sales.
Not much to get excited about today at the Highland Park, IL store. The only real bass bargain was a brand new Mesa M-Pulse 600 in the nifty head cabinet for $900. They had a couple Dean basses (the Flying V and Explorer shaped ones) for $99. A Squier Affinity P-Bass was $89 (IIRC) and a black MIM J was $280.
Not many Guitar deals either...a couple Vox modeling amps (the expensive ones) were priced low.
How about your sale?

I had a bunch of gift cards saved from X-mas and my birthday and had been GASing for a new 4 sting that would meet or beat my Spector Performer 4 in sound and playability.
I ended up with a floor model Fender Highway-1 Jazz for $499. The GC also has a Fender Jazz Bass 24 for $399. After playing both I decided on the Highway-1 due to the feel of the neck size and finish. Both were in good condition with a decent stock setup. Only other bases of note that seemed deeply discounted were some Warwick Rockbasses.

There was a used Squire P bass for $89 but some guy grabbed it up quickly. There was also a Mesa Fifty/Fifty head under the discount table but it didn't have a price on it. Looked quite dusty. |

Killer deal but too much cab for me. I was looking for a similar deal on the Mesa 4X10 but they didn't have any left at my GC. bummer.
I did pick up a Rock n Roller MultiCart for $109 and another $6 guitar stand.

There was an MIM Fretless J for 220, which was pretty nice. A brand new HS Maple Board EBMM Stelring for 975 or something. Warwick Rockbasses for 275 or so. Yamaha TRB1005 for like 360. Not bad.
They also had a used Gen Benz 210 cabinet for 199 (Normal price, not a sale price) that I really wanted to buy. Too bad I'm saving all my pennies for a few big purchases soon. |

The setup was okay, and the natural finish was HOT, but its previous owner had replaced the barts with basslines, the g string was seriously borked at the bridge, and it had short scale strings on it. I was seriously tempted, but I wouldn't be able to afford a decent fix in the near future. I made sure someone cool walked out with it though. |

The one in Edina had a lot more deals. I didn't end up buying anything, but my friend that went down there with me walked out with a very nice condition 1968 Gibson EB-2 bass for $800. Not really my thing, but it plays like butter. I spent most of my time with a used Pedulla Thunderbass that they were selling for $1300--very nice playing and sounding bass. If I could have in any way justified another 5 string fretted bass, I would have taken it home (in other words, my wife would have killed me). They had some other pretty decent deals, but nothing that I really needed/wanted.

| | | | A local radio station was broadcasting from my nearest GC. Too many people just standing around taking up space.
The bass department was empty of customers, though. No good deals to speak of. Just a bunch of GK Gold Line stuff they've been trying to get rid of for 5 months now. They had a Sage and a Tobias Killer B 5-string (with most of its knobs pilfered) marked down a few hundred dollars off the outrageous tag prices, but not low enough that you couldn't find the same bass in better condition for less money on Ebay.
Some decent guitar prices, though. I didn't explore too much because it was overcrowded. There were even three greeters at the door. |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Sep 2000 Location: Chicago | | | The one I attended had little of real interest. They had a demo SVT-CL for $699 (I think) that sounded like it needed new preamp tubes and a brand new Mesa Powerhouse 410D was $499. There was supposedly a Walkabout 1x12 combo (I saw it on Friday while doing recon) marked down from $999 to $799. I didn't see it.
Some OLP guitars for $99. Other cheap guitar stuff...a Dean ML bass was on the list for $49 but I didn't see it.
I bought an acoustic guitar case that's regularly $70 for $50...something I actually needed for a change.
Either I'm losing interest or the sales are getting less good...

Really low. The SVT Classic was marked at $799. The BR2 was $199.
Strings were about $7 a set. I got some DR low riders since I've wanted to try those.
Oh, and I picked up a new Mesa Walkabout 12" Combo for $799!!! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
