How Diverse are the Types of Music you Play?

My wife commented that I was insane when she heard me practicing a few songs the other night.

She though it was very strange that somone would play "Play That Funky Music White Boy" then Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" followed by my own bass version of Clapton's "Tears in Heaven".

Am I nuts, should I focus on one type of music or do many of you also play completely different styles of music?

Just curious.....

Be as diverse as you can! It will only make you a better musician. Back in my road days, I played everything from Top-40 to Rock to Blues to Jazz to Latin. Never a dull moment (except when I had to play the Electric Slide!) and I think I became a better bassist because of it.

"All metal, all the time"

I sort of wish I was more diverse but I play what I like.

I usually play Funk and Jazz, i mix it up with some classical stuff now and then, Moonlight Sanata kicks my arse : ( hard to tap that out, streeeeetttttching can be hard, haha.

But yeah... my little list of things i play randomly is just insane to most non musicians... working on progressive stuff, to Death metal, to Jazz to w/e is on my mind... been working with some otis redfield songs lately, god... Sittin on the dock of the bay is an amazing song to play with, who could ask for a better singer then Otis ? haha.

I play a wide variety of stuff. Fusion is my real love though, but anything with a good tune I'll play!

I've been starting work on Jeff Berlin's version of "Tears In Heaven", it's just utterly phenomenal!

the more versatile, the better, methinks. i am trying to work on my jazz 'cause i SUCK at jazz.

the band i play in, we play african, caribbean, latin american music, but none of it in the traditional way. it opens songs up for a lot of different genres to fuse simulaneously.
so it really helps to know more than one style.

It's always good to be diverse as possible. It'll only make your main style of playing much better by adding different dimensions to it.

I play everything from French folk music (with a bagpiper!) to jazz, with C&W, blues and zydeco in the mix.

I'd play classical too if I had better chops with a bow.

Some people like being diverse, some don't. I've never played jazz outside of the woodshed. I play classic rock and country on Saturday night and traditional hymns on Sundays. I play quiet acoustic and hard rock.

"We got both kinds of music here... Country AND Western!"

Seriously, i'm pretty narrow, jazz, fusion and the occasional blues/r&b gig.
