How do I attach strap to acoustic-electric classical guitar?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, I have one of these and I need a strap for it:
http://www.rondomusic.com/cg190ce.html

On the top, I understand how to tie a thin string around the neck above the nut, then attach that to the strap.

On the bottom, I don't know what to do. The jack is just a normal jack like you'd see on a bass, with no "shoulder" or whatever for attaching a strap. In addition, the jack isn't on the bottom of the guitar, but on the bottom-right as you look at the first picture of the guitar (the jack isn't shown in any of the pics on that link).

So, what do I do?

Durrrrrr......

Thanks for your help.

I've done it to a cheapo acoustic-electric bass guitar and drilled a hole into the end block where the strap pin should be. Make sure you drill small, then use progressively bigger bits because you don't want to crack the end block. Then simply screw in a strap pin.

Hi.

On the Taylor's and K.Yairi's I have, there's already "strap pins". The rear is either in the jack, or a separate one in the end block. The neck one is on the side of the neck heel.

I've installed strap-locks on cheapos just like tpylons explained, and also screwed the front one on the side or back of the neck heel.

IME ONLY, SO TAKE IT AS YOU SEE FIT: Never, ever, use the "sound-hole strap". If something bad happens (and it usually does on acoustic gigs), You'll crack the top of the instrument. It was a cheapo, so no great loss, but still an un-necessary damage to otherwise decent instrument.

Regards
Sam

Thanks everyone. I finally looked in the soundhole and saw that indeed there is an end block (I guess, a block of wood anyway... durrr.....) inside on the bottom of the guitar. As you can guess I don't know squat about how guitars are made, and I was afraid there was nothing substantial in which to screw a proper strap pin. So, now that I know there is, I'll try that. Thanks again.

This is where I put the front pin. I don't like having the neck supporting the bass with all that sideways load.

The neck leads a tough enough life trying to keep the strings in position over the fret board at the correct height and not have the strings move to the bass side of the neck too.

I bought the shoelace strap attachment and just tossed it after I saw the way it looked once it was on. Yuck!
