Question How do I get the Mark Hoppus sound?

Sign in to disble this ad
So what happened was me and my lead guitar player broke off from my other band, found a new drummer, and know we play blink 182 and we're pretty good.
I have a 412 Neo Series Gallien-Krueger cabinet and a 700RB head and lately I've been trying to get the Mark Hoppus sound out of it, and I'm having trouble. Please suggest settings for the head to get Mark's sound. Thanks...

I'm not familiar with GK heads. First thing i can think of is get rid of the GK & get an Ampeg SVT. I haven't listened to Blink 182 in probably 8 years, but it's a safe bet that Mark used an SVT.

SVT + P-Bass = lots of rock bass tones.

Google to the rescue! "Mark Hoppus Bass Setup"

Gear used:
http://www.fenderplayersclub.com/art...blink.htm#gear

TB thread of old:
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/archiv...p/t-19318.html

I play fingerstyle but our band used to cover a couple 182 tracks. I just used to wind the highs on the bass up a bit and dig in harder.

Yep, its just a standard p bass into an svt-810 type of sound. TRy getting a sansamp. That should get you close enough.

Why would you want to? You'll never sound the same anyway. There's far too many parameters in one person's sound and many of them has very little to do with the gear used. Anyway, in addition to what's already been said, check out what pick type he uses and how he holds it, how hard he plays, the strings and the gauges, where he picks, where on the neck he usually play, his action, his attitude and energy, his timing (driving or laid back?), how high/low he keeps his bass, how much he eq's the signal, etc etc etc etc..........

I've given up trying to sound like someone else long time ago. Instead I go for what I think sounds good to me. I'll sound like me whatever gear I play through, and other bassists playing through my rig sound like themselves too. How one person sound has actually very little to do with the actual equipment.

+2

my friends copy my pups, signal path, and EQ, and they never nail my tone down.

...well it has something to do with the equipment, but yes, there are just too many variables.

I'm assuming the colors were taken from these: The top one is the mega-blocks rip-off of lego...generally, the megablocks are pastel colored as well
