How do we define personal success in the music industry?

Sign in to disble this ad
At which point would you consider an artist successful?

Record deal?

Selling out arenas worldwide?

Making enough money to feed a small nation?

or

Having a loyal audience?

Having fun?

Making enough to buy more gear?

It varies person to person.

I haven't reached my pinnacle of success yet, I am sure of that. When we can successfully headline an entire US Tour, at venues 500+, than I will consider myself successful enough to die happy.

I think once a band has fans, they're successful. Like, various fans. Not friends and family and friends of family.

I think anyone who makes their living from playing music is successful.

What about King's X? These guys have been around for a long time, have a loyal following but have really been ignored by in large except for critics and their loyal following. I'd like to ask them this question.

Short range- having a good name in the local scene, opening up for a national act or at a big fest.

Medium range- lasting on a DYI tour for a few months.

Same here. Well, it has to be released by some obscure record label that nobody has heard of. My name is already on one former band's very-pro-looking self-released demo, which I give my success a B+ for.

Success is making music that touches people and that people enjoy.

Of course, there is a huge amount of difference between the most and least successful.

I look back at the last 26 years since I played my first paid gig for $7.50 and free beer...

-- I'm on over half a dozen recordings, with more in the pipe

-- I've played and recorded with a few of my musical heroes

Michael Hurley

Rufus Thomas

Doug James

Danny Poullard

Mark Sandman

-- I've appeared in a movie

-- I'm still out gigging 2-4 nights every week

So looking back I've been more successful than I probably deserve

Being able to tour for most of the year, and to be able to have a wide fanbase would be success in my book. Enough money to live while touring, as well.

Those are some good answers.

Success for me would be for my music to make an impression on someone the way musicians that I look up to have made impressions on me.

Gas money is nice too.
