I've been using iTunes but I'm starting to realize that I can use other sites that are free or at least chaper. Any thoughts?

Of course I want to stay away from places that can give viruses.

If you go the "free" route, http://www.slsknet.org Soulseek is a p2p program, way better IMO than Kazaa or Limewire, or those other programs.

I also use torrents.

http://oink.me.uk - private community for Bit Torrent music lovers where you will find alot of stuff in 192kbps bitrate or higher quality only. You'll need a bit torrent client, try out ABC, Azureus or Bit Comet.

Another great bit torrent site is http://www.kerrazy-torrents.net - it's not private like oink, but it still has a great selection along with lots of live/music videos too. Also, another bit torrent client that I like over the above mentioned is uTorrent.

To the people that use allofmp3--why *do* you use it? Artists aren't getting the money, it's still illegal... Every way I look at it, using that site just seems to be pretty stupid

As for what I use... I like iTunes quite a bit, although if there's a single out that I don't want to buy on iTunes because I know I'm gonna buy the CD later anyway, I sometimes use LimeWire to download it.

I've also been looking at EMusic's services... Totally legal, you get something like 40 downloads per month for $10, and the downloads are in plain MP3 format with no DRM. Doesn't have as much on there as iTunes, but seems to be a good service anyway.

I use allofmp3 because I can get perfect CD rips at a selected bit rate and in a selected format. I'm also on 56k, so rather than downloading something slowly over a p2p, I can get it rather fast by downloading from allofmp3's servers. Plus, I don't have to wade through misnamed files.

I am a big fan of LIVE music as I am sure most of you guys are. My favorite site for live music(and it is endorsed by all of the bands that are listed) is archive.org. There is TONS of music on that site. Some of them have to be downloaded, some of it can be streamed directly from the site. One of my personal favorites is a band called Umphreys McGee. Do yourselves a favor and check out the site. 2864 live recordings of the grateful dead. Yummy. If you go to the main page look for the tab under live music archive that says by band. It is right next to browse. That will give you the list of alll the musical goodness. Or you can cut and paste this http://www.archive.org/browse.php?co...data%2Fcreator

ENJOY. My bass playing brothers. And please let me know what you think.

Try googleing a program named Cabos, it downloads stuff pretty fast, even on my 56k modem (usually ~ 1/2 hour for 3-4 1/2 minute song, but YOUR mileage may vary).
