How do you explain it??

How do you explain the differnce between bass guitar and guitar to people who don't know the difference. People at work seem to think I play the guitar when I play the bass. How do you explain it to people so that they get the difference?

Not that I'm often asked, but I usually rattle off something that I know they're not going to get anyhow, and forget about it because it's not important that they understand what instrument I play.

I say something like "I play bass - electric bass - the big one with the four strings on it? Like McCartney that Beatle guy - " all in one breath, even if I happen to play a 5- or 6-string bass and I know Paul's Hoffy isn't all 'that' big' and he's no longer with the Beatles and everything else.

It's...better that nobody actually talks to me

Just tell them that the bass is a 4-string or 5-string instrument that looks like a guitar, but is larger, has a low and deep sound that a guitar can't make. The strings are thicker, too. People who play bass co-exist with drums to make the rhythm of a song. However, they can also be more than just rhythm - we bassists can solo, too!

The guitar, on the other hand, has 6 puny strings, and has a high and whiny sound. People who play guitar usually make incoherent noise and play lots of fast notes for no decent reason at all.

Emphasize "whiny"

No, for guitar it's:
"wheedley wheedley wheedley wheedley" and bass is:
"dow DOW dow dow DOW DOW dow".

Hahaha, comments like thses make me picture random people just making these noises, and it's funny!

As for when people ask me, I tell them that: "You know that rumbling senstation you felt when we were playing?"

THey say "yea?"

I say: "that's the bass"

They say "o"

(though we all know that theres much more to the bass than that, it's the easiest way. either that, or I attempt to compare the bass to a sandwhich....don't ask )

One time, I had a smarta$$ at hand, and he responded: "I thought I was rumbling cause I was hungry?"

heh.

Technically speaking it is a guitar. It's an electric bass guitar.

Same notes as a 6 string guitar, just tuned lower, so they have more depth.

Actually, I like this response best. Make sure it's open palmed and that you hit the fleshy part of the cheek for maximum sting... of course, you must immediately walk away without saying anything and act as if nothing happened.

I tried expaining it and this lady keeps saying. You play guitar then. SHe just cannot get it thrrough her head that I play bass. The other guitar that rumbles. She sees bass as another guitar. Not a a rhythmic instrument.
