OTOH, it's the crap tune every time you are asked when there's jazz guys in a room "hey an electric bass player!! shall we play the chicken ???" ...... ORLY ???? YOU ASKED ME "THE CHICKEN" ??
that's why I'm fed up with that tune, it's now a ... pretext to crap jams.... |

Chameleon is harder, but maybe you can get away with just playing the vamp!

| | | | OP, not funky ? seriuosly ? just cause he aint slappin the bejeesus out of the thing it aint funky? dude, I just watched a vid and it sounded pretty damn funky to me, jaco could make it greasy and swing at the same time, in my book thats FUNKY. Regardless if you've heard the tune one too many times or not you cant deny that the man had an incredible internal meter. |

The Chicken can come off like a generic tv soundtrack. Jaco was a genius, but I never saw him as a pure funk player.

it does sound like a cheesy game-show theme song!!!

Just curious to see what other folks think. | Sir, I respectfully disagree with your position. On the live version from Jaco's "Invitation" record, he sits in a deep funky groove while simultaneously soaring above it. This is the very core of his musical genius. Also, Othello Molineaux's solo is just shocking...sick!
I agree the tune is like the "Mustang Sally" or "Brown-Eyed Girl" of jazz/R&B, indeed it's way played-out. But it's good to know it in case cats call it out at a jam or open mic. That's happened to me a bit. |

Chameleon is harder, but maybe you can get away with just playing the vamp! | Plain right !!! my local blues jam sessions always plays Chameleon, cos' you know... it's an easy I-IV but... you'll never hear the theme played correctly, yeah... only vamps, that's why I'm fed with that tune too.
Once I started with Freddie Freeloader... yep in a basic blues jam, I thought it wasn't so hard and breaking down with those "chicken-chameleon" things ya know....only one musician managed to solo, the others just searching after chords.... and badly faking |

That said, it's in the category of songs I just can't get tired of along with Freddie Freeloader, All Blues and Chameleon. Just about sick of Mr. Magic but its not quite The Chicken for me (though the B section upsets me with it's cheesiness).
And to clarify my ideas about The Chicken a little more. Is it funky? Ok, fine, a little but I would NEVER in a million years use it as an example to showcase what "funky" means. I would sooner use a Dave Matthews or John Mayer tune.

| | | | I really like other bassists' takes of it, but I think the song itself defines pretentious jazz. It's not funky, and it's not groovy. Merely an emperor's new clothes type of thing among those looking to appear knowledgeable. I have no qualms at all with Jaco or anything else he's done. |

| | | | Give me Paul Jackson or one those guys that played on 70's-80's era porn soundtracks, maybe a little George Porter, Chuck Rainey to name a few
Mathews/ Mayer No Sir, I dont like it
"The Chicken" .... I've heard worse
