How do you feel about groups that sell their songs to ad agency's?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just saw a "Dirt sweeper" commercial with Heart in the background singing "What about love".

I think it cheapens the group. IMO. I know they get paid, but it does lean my feeling toward the band a bit......cheap.

I honestly felt really disappointed when I saw a Kraft salad dressing ad featuring a Flaming Lips song.

I don't take offense to the practice entirely, but discretion is certainly appreciated.

I couldn't care less... but it seems to me, if so many are going to steal artist music instead of buying it, getting a pay day from advertisers makes sense.

Sounds like good marketing to me. Plus, those mop commercials own.

My thoughts in a nutshell.

I hate commercials. They always seem to have negative result on me. I see a stupid commercial, I avoid the product. Even good commercials do not persuade me to buy something. If I need something, I read about it.

So the use of a songs in commercials typically has the same negative result. It is only good if the commercial is funny... unfortunately, my idea of what is funny is not always commercial friendly. Go figure.

It doesn't bother me, depending if it's done well. I think "Happy Jack" and Hummer was pretty appropriate, for instance. It only bothers me when bands that sing against "big business" allow it. That, my friends, is the very definition of selling out!

Yeah. I felt really betrayed when Wrangler took the song Fortunate Son by CCR and edited it to sound like it's a patriotic celebration. "Some folks are born/Made to wave the flag/Ooh they're red, white, and blue." The whole "point the canon at you" line conspicuously absent while images of tag football games and picnics flash in front of the viewer.

Exactly. Hearts song "Barracuda" was written against their record label and its demands and low pay. Now they are selling to big business.

I have a real aversion to advertising... I don't like how it programs me. I still whistle jingles from various commercials I was exposed to as a child...( $1.49 day... TUESDAY!). I do everything I can to hit mute and turn away once the commercials come on (yes, it's an argument for getting a PVR). I don't care one way or another whether an artist sells a song to a company for advertising. More power to them. However, it will do nothing positive towards how I feel about the song once I see the commercial. When I hear a song I like, I want to think and feel what the song means to me, not about Hummers and Bee Mops...

On a gut level I really dislike it. Still, it begs the question - How do you feel about musicians who are able to pay for their own health insurance and maybe also afford to fix their kids teeth?

I think it's the most whorish, sellout thing an artist can do, & I am extremely jealous.

Yep, that's about the size of it. I generally think it cheapens the song. If it's a band I really love that never made much money, I cut them more of a break.

I feel that they are probably making out better financially than I am! I also don't watch any television so it doesn't affect my opinion of their music one bit.

Just because an artist's music is being used to sell a product doesn't mean that the artist is the one who made the decision to use it in the ad or is the one making money off of it. It's whomever owns the publishing. When you hear an ad using a Beatles song, Paul McCartney is not the one making money on it.

I agree, but I also wonder why someone would ever sell their rights to the business? It's like selling your soul to satan without all the perks.

I hate when a song gets played by, say a commercial/business, then all of a sudden everyone loves it.
-I lovedPaint it Black by the Stones, but then it was in Twisted Metal Black (which was not too bad, a badass song for a badass game) but then all of a sudden everyone knew it after Guitar Hero, and they think they are cool because they are Rolling Stones fans. Please, tell me about Mother's Little Helper and I can give you credit.

I am a firm beliver that I can do with my property whatever I want unless is something ilegal, and not only me but everybody else, in this case Heart does not need to ask me what to do because I would never ask permission to them to do what I please neither.

I can say this; I made more money in one quarterly BMI check than I did in 10 years of gigging bars from licensing my music.

I guess that makes me ok with it. Thank you One Life to Live. Thank you Young and the Restless. Thank you NBC.
