How Do You Organize Your Cables?

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't have that much equipment relative to most of the people on this site and i was wonder if people had some tips on keeping your cables organized, so they don't get tangled, we all know how frustrating that can be...

I keep a little box next to my rig with all my cables, extra strings, and just random speaker parts.

Any cable I'm not using is properly coiled and secured with a velcro cable wrap. I make exceptions for a short cable on my workbench connected to a tuner, and one cable between whatever bass I'm using and my practice amp.

Extra non-bass cables (mike cables, power cords, etc) are coiled, secured with a velcro cable wrap and kept in a black carry bag.

Velcro wraps, in a medium sized duffle bag. The cables I use most (instrument and speaker) are on top. Along with tuner, strap, small bass stand, and song lists. My backup cables are deeper, so I keep things pretty orderly by not having to rummage thru the bag.

This, whenever possible. I dont live at my practice space anymore, so I put a hook on my wall and hang 4 or 5 different types of cables (coiled & velcro'd, of course) there so that I can do some home recordings and bring new ideas to practice.

Instrument and speaker cables are "lazy-looped", secured with velcro, and stored (according to type) in cast-off CPAP carry bags, then stashed in a foot locker.

As far as the FOH gear goes, the patch and power cables are stowed in the rack boxes, and the speaker cables are wound onto large plastic spools (Lowe's). The whole schmear is stored in an oversize Rubbermaid bin along with power strips, ext. cords, reference mike, etc.

Cables coiled up, tied with velcro wraps, hanging from hooks in my basement.

All of mine are coiled up neatly with velcro wraps. I got lucky and got a ton of velcro wraps on clearance at Walmart over the summer.

How do you use those velcro wraps correctly they actually confuse me. Well at least the moster cable ones do, i don't understand what the middle velcro section is for.

2 tips:

- google "bundling wrap"
- cables in a ziploc bag can't get tangled up with other cables

A good tip: I have a few extra cords and power cables so I wrapped up one of each with velcro wraps and put a set in the pocket of every single case I own. When I take my bass somewhere I always put it in the case with a cable, so this guarantees I have a backup.

I used wingnuts/bolts to hold velcro cable ties and drilled through the back cover of my rack. this way i coil the cable up, velcro it to the inside of the rack cover and go.

That's what i thought, but

1.) the velcro in the middle seems to be fused together making it almost impossible to open on the fly.

2.) I guess since i use angled cables using that loop would be completely pointless.
