HOW does one play Baba O Riley live?!

Sign in to disble this ad
hey guys.

im stuck here.

my band REALLY wants to play baba o riley at a local high school bonfire but we can't figure out how.

We have the real track, and the track with only synth.

Whenever we try to play with the track thats only synth, we get out of time. Its simply too hard to use that crazy synth as a metronome.

But we would rather not play with the real song in the background because the drums clash sometimes.

How do you play baba o riley live using the synth?

Why don't you use a sequencer to play the synth part? You can trigger the sequenced part with a MIDI pedal board just like Geddy does.

My buddy does it live, but he plays the synth part on piano.

I do it in a 5 piece band with 2 guitars and no keys. ONe of the guitars plays a sixteenth note pattern of 1-1-5-5-8-8-5-5 to fake the key part in the intro and the other guitar and I do the hits. Doesn't sound perfect but people recognize the song immediately. Sometimes I double the part and it sounds pretty cool. Obviously once the song kicks in then we just drop the synth part till the breakdown/guitar solo-thing.

Just watched the videos and realized they're basically doing the same thing.

Why don't you play to a click track? Or at least have the drummer play to a click, and have the sample play simultaneously?

Here's a better way and you can pull it off with no synths...just a lot of PVC pipe!

Actually, it's not that hard to do if you have a tremolo pedal. Set the depth a little more than halfway, and adjust the speed to your liking. Then just play root-fifth-octave-fifth. Let each note ring to it's fullest.

Tab would look like this (in D)
E --10------------
A -----12-----12--
D --------12-------
G -----------------

For the quick little run, you do a III-IV-V with the root as the bass note. Something like this.
E -----------------
A -----------------
D 12--12--12------
G 11--12--14------
Strum up and down to mimic the fast run of the synth.

They have what, four percussionists, plus the blue men? And still can't even come close to Kieth Moon.

My band does it similar to Pearl Jam with the synth part being played on guitar. We had one guitarist doing the root-5th-octave part and another guitarist doing the little trills. If you only have one guitarist, it sounds perfectly fine without the trill part.
